Fun times!Posted Tuesday, February 26, 2008, at 4:55 PM
Whew!
After that last blog, I am ready to talk about something a bit happier. I sure didn't mean to get everyone in such a tizzy! I guess that's the beauty of a blog though. Ok ok, on to bigger and better things. Today, I want to tell you about a place that I love. I don't get to go often because it's in Franklin and schedules don't always mesh. It is also a bit on the expensive side, yet completely worth every dime. It's The Viking Cooking School. Viking offers all kinds of class that interest just about every taste out there. They range from Southern foods, French, Grilling, knife skills, all the way to Japanese and desserts. It's pretty much like being in the middle of the Food Network. So far, I have only taken a Japanese Steak House class and Advanced Cake decorating. In May, my dad and I are going to celebrate his birthday with a sushi workshop. Most, but not all of the classes are hands on. The Japanese steak house class was conducted in a large cooking "theatre." A group or 7 of us sat around a large counter with a hibachi grill in front of us. The chef taught us how to make the ginger dressing for the salad, that fantastic fried rice, Kobe steak, grilled vegetables and all of the dipping sauces. Not only did we learn how to make the meal, but we got to eat it too! That class would be perfect for a date night. The Advanced cake decorating class was held in my dream kitchen. That part feels like Food Network. You get to work in such a nice kitchen with everything at arms reach. I have to say that the absolute best part did not have to clean up after myself! It's really a great experience. If you have a little time and would like to learn more about gourmet cooking, I highly recommend taking a class. That sounds really neat Keeley!
I'd like to try that out (except for the fact that I can't even boil an egg correctly! LOL)
My husband has always talked about being a chef and he enjoys cooking.I think if we visit a place like this it might encourage him. I've never heard of this place, but I think it sounds so neat. This would also be fun for the kids. They love to cook. Thanks for telling us about this!
Do they allow you to bring kids to class?........Sorry, I couldn't resist. That was only meant as a joke, so don't get mad...;>)
What a great idea. I have always wanted to take a class like this. Thanks.
For those who'd like to stay local, Whitney Danhof of the UT Extension, also gives cooking classes. In fact, last night she began her spring series. There are about five classes per series, each class with its own theme. Last night's theme was March Madness and the focus was appetizers and such. Next time I believe she's preparing a five course meal with Lamb being the main course. Check with Whitney if you'd like to sign up for her next series (I think she's sold out for this series but not sure).
Anyway, these classes are not hands on, but Whitney does a great job taking the class through each item on the menu step by step. It would be like being in the audience of a Food Network Show. You can see everything she's doing because she has a mirror above her station.
The best part about this is that each class member gets to eat everything Whitney cooks. Arrive hungry.
ha! No, they don't want you to bring your kids to class. They do offer classes just for kids.
