Remember When?

Posted Wednesday, August 22, 2007, at 5:27 PM

Being a child of the 70'sand 80's I started out with the famous antenna on our television 2,4,and 5 and sometimes 8 was all we got then came the invention of cable. I grew up on shows like M.A.S.H. and The Dukes of Hazard, The Hulk just to name a few. We even had Saturday Morning cartoons , don't see those anymore. TBS came around and then the reruns of my parents shows like the ones you see on TV LAND my favorite being The Andy Griffith show. There are several others that I watch , what I consider good wholesome family T.V.. Hollywood is going back and disgracing some of these shows like The Brady Bunch and The Dukes of Hazard to name a few. There is probably more in the works, in my opinion they are doing a disgrace to these classic forerunners of today's T.V. Instead of these being shown they are now showing the reruns of Roseanne and other suggestive shows. I am not a prude by any means , but how far will they go to get ratings. Imagine a remake of Andy Griffith with a torrid affair between Aunt Bea and Floyd or a custody case over Opie and his recently found undead mother. Hollywood can do whatever kind of movies they want to , but they need to leave the classics alone. They are memories that I want to share with my kids to have the same memories I have, not the ones Hollywood is making. It seems as they are trying to wipe out the traditional family values and replace them with the non-family values of today. Thank goodness for TV LAND AND Amc and Turner TV for still showing good TV and movies. I know there are some good shows on broadcast TV, but I think the last time I watched 2,4,5 except for sports was for TOOL TIME AND WALKER TEXAS RANGER. That has been a while to , Walt Disney used to have a classic movie on every Sunday night for the whole family. This must be a sign of the times it seems that the public is becoming desensitized to quality TV. I will admit that I have watched wrestling since birth it seems , but even that has gone off the deep end. What's next nude cheerleaders on the sidelines? Sports which used to be safe to watch now has steroid , gambling , dogfighting , drugs and all kind of sex scandals to hear about. That is probably why my T.V. stays on the church channels or the history channels or T.V. Land. Sometimes the best feature on the T.V. is the switch that turns it off, clean the dust off your bible and have sometime with God!

Dude, Hollywood just like everyone else has ONE GOAL, profit...

They will make a movie on whatever is most popular. It isn't like they are telling people YOU MUST WATCH THIS or YOU MUST AGREE WITH US. It is a choice to like what they put out.

And the difference between today's sports and the sports of two decades ago, is all of that was going on, we just didn't hear about it. Again, those ratings you talk about, is because all of those horrible stories sell and cause traffic on whatever channel puts it out there.

I do agree things have become less wholeome and family oriented, but again it is a reflection of the majority of America now. This isn't the 1950s family anymore.

So I guess that means you don't watch "Weeds" or "Californication" or "The L Word"?

I completely agree with you! There is junk on t.v., movie theaters, and the radio these days. Instead of having Tom & Jerry (which if there was a show by that name now it would be like Chuck and Larry instead of innocent cat and mouse) we have Southpark or The Simpson's! I am sad that Saturday morning cartoons are days gone by now. Getting up early to watch the smurf's over my bowl of trix! Those were good times :)

We are becoming so desensitized that what would have had tongues wagging ten years ago doesn't cause us to blink an eye now... very scary indeed

I miss the smufs too..Saturday morning's aren't the same are they? I got up a few Saturdays ago and turned on the TV to Find shows like "Hannah Montana" Raven" "Power Rangers" and the "X-men" I wondered where is Bugs Bunny and Roadrunner?

Even nighttime TV stinks if you don't like Reality TV then you better have Cable. You've got Wife Swap, Marry My Mom, American Idol, America's Got Talent, The Singing Bee, Star Search, Last Comic Standing, American Inventor plus about a dozen more...where the heck is the good ole comedy sitcoms or even a weepy drama.

I don't know about you but I have enough Reality in real life when I watch TV I want something I don't have to really think about..

Amen! have you actually sat down and watched the cartoons of today? They are awful! The popular, Sponge Bob Squarepants, is ridiculous and I can't figure out why it is a cartoon!! Smurfs are my favorite too!!

It always seems like the older generation is always complaining about what the newer generation is watching and doing. My parents did it and I know I do it to a degree and will probably get worse as I get older(I am 32 now). Sure, there are some crap tvs shows on now but there are some good ones too. I love Heroes, Jericho, and Lost. I remember growing up as a kid watching the Dukes of Hazard, Knight Rider, Bionic Woman, etc and I remember my parents saying how those shows werent like the good old shows of their time. What is funny though is that how can anyone say Dukes of Hazard is a quality tv program . . . its more of a guilty pleasure just as certain shows are today like Desperate Housewives.

I do miss the cartoons though . . I grew up on Transformers, GI Joe, He-Man and the like and always thought that the Smurfs and Bugs Bunny were the most retarded shows ever. It just goes to show how people are different and how their taste in entertainment can differ. I dont see anything wrong with that . . . to each his own.

The older generations will always say things weren't like they used to be. I am 21 and I find myself saying the very same things...

But all people need to understand is that if you don't like it, don't watch it. Whatever is the most popular and makes the most money is exactly what is going to be produced.

Very nicely put jaxspike.

Most of the shows on tv now, seem to be reality-based. It just seems like all the shows are alike, there are few shows I actually take the time to watch now. Even cartoons, they just don't make any sense to me anymore.

My folks used to gripe about the junk on TV WAY back in the 70's too. I remember one we'd all watch was Laugh In. I guess us kids were laughing at the grown ups laughing, because if I watch it now, I can't believe some of the stuff they were doing and talking about on this show. Its almost like today. Now a days, I'm embarrassed to watch a country music awards show with the older folks. I guess its all about perfection having lots of "you know what".
