Hooray for McCainPosted Monday, October 1, 2007, at 5:06 PM
Seems that John McCain got blasted for his comment on America being based on Judeo-Christian values[for full story go to www.cnn.com . I will be the first to admit that there should be freedom of religion and that is to worship whatever or whomever you want to.
The founding fathers wanted the freedom to worship God/Jesus Christ how they wanted to not the way the government told them to for the founding fathers original comments you can go to www.eadshome.com and read them. VERY WELL SAID REVOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF Michael would simply READ his fellow bloggers topic starters, he would realize that Carl Maclahan has already started a blog about this topic and so eloquently debunked the notion that America was founded on Christian principles...
It is ENTIRELY innacurate and misleading to say this country was founded on ONE religion...
It is a horrible injustice to our founding fathers to put words in their mouth and actually believe the United States of America, was founded on Chrisitan principles... Ironically enough, Michael, you of all people seem to have the LEAST amount of historical Christian knowledge, (yet claim to be a wonderful Christian) which is dangerous...It is best to know where you came from, in order to know where you're going... And if you didn't know that our country had no religious preferences in the beginning, it shows your lack of historical knowledge about America, and your very own over-hyped religion... Because there are quite a few people in this world, who have NO idea what the Constiution or Declaration of Independence means... The last time I checked, the Bible said nothing about America... So it is only fair to say our Constitution says nothing about the Bible!
And Revolution, that 55% of people who think this nation was founded on Christianity is probably 100% Christian in faith.. Which leads me to wonder, what else are they wrong about?
The thing that I find so amusing is that if you were the son of an Afghan couple you would be a Muslim and probably of the radical suicide bombing persuasion. If Christians became the minority in our nation, how loudly would you cry out for separation of church and state when Hindus, Jews, or Muslims made up the majority of elected officials in local, state, and national government? THINK ABOUT IT!!!
Very good point Nathan!
I find myself in somewhat of quandary on this discussion. While I agree with and support Nathan and Darrick on the Constitutional issues and would never want a breach in the separation of church and state, this issue is not only about constitutional concepts. The issue of whether this is or has been a Christian nation is a lot broader than that. I know the link below is to a "conservative" rag (and by Chuck Norris no less) but indulge me please. It gives some context to the Treaty of Tripoli and broadens the discussion beyond a select few of the original framers.

The real question is not about a Christian state (government) but about the characteristics of our social fabric. We were from the beginning and are now a Christian nation since polling consistently shows that the overwhelming majority of US citizens claim to be Christians (2001 poll taken said 80% whereas in Israel only about 77% are Jewish).
What being Christian means I am no longer sure since a great many would be an embarrassment to Jesus. The framers of the Constitution probably understood this all too well. If fact they might have meant separation of Christians and state.
Just because people are polled and say they are Christian doesn't mean a thing to me.
You can poll all the people in Church, but just because they go to church doesn't mean they are Christian...
Anyways, the Framers knew what they were doing, sometimes I think more than we do. When we get into wanting to change laws about religion, someone's toes will be stepped on, it's not always to predict exactly whose, though.
Oh, but I think it should mean something to you. Certainly saying you are a Christian doesn't mean you behave like one but it may mean you would like to if you just weren't so confused by all the layers of religion that has smothered the true Christian spirit - you know faith, hope, charity. I think that is one of the true dynamics of the American experience. How can we be good as a nation if we can't be good as individuals?
devan,
