Fresh Air

Posted Friday, October 5, 2007, at 3:14 PM

I got off of work early Wednesday morning and decided to stop by the Huddle House for a bite to eat and to do some reading so I wouldn't wake all the family up when I came in.

The I noticed something, no smoke smell , except for the food , and it was great.

It is amazing how you can get used to something over a long period of time and learn to ignore it , but when it is not there to ignore you notice it.

Next we need to petition for some more family oriented restaurants which does not serve booze.

It fine to have the ones that do serve it for those who do drink it.

Having to pass all the drunks while taking your kids to the bathroom isn't fun.

I know that people will say that if you don't like it don't go and that is true , but it is a shame that the kids and their parents can't go out for a nice evening without the fear of a unruly drunk.

I guess it be the same as going for a weekend trip to Sodom and to expect no problems to arise.

The Christian's in this community need to get together and start a Christian themed restaurant ,you know with no drinking and cussing and lewd behavior ,well for the most part that shot that ideal down.

I mean a place that caters to families to bring their kids to hear Gospel music even dance and to fellowship outside of church , have a buffet.

Since smoking is a Christian's pet sin , I guess it would be allowed as long as it was outside

This would be all Christian's ,those at least willing to put down their different doctrines and standards and realize that the true standard is Jesus Christ and our man-made standards are just that , man-made.

Smoking and drinking in restaurants is being discussed in another blog....seems you are a little late that subject.

-- Posted by dc_0725 on Fri, Oct 5, 2007, at 3:30 PM

There are empty restaurants around and quite a few 'People of the Book' and others who would appreciate a family friendly atmosphere.

Such an establishment could carry any kind of food- from new, exotic cuisine introduced by people who have come here from different cultures to old-fashioned,Southern-style 'meat and three.'

A restaurant like that would attract good customers and workers who'd enjoy cooking and serving in a place with a safe, congenial atmosphere.

It would be an especially good place for people trying to walk away from their bad choices and get a second chance at living their lives in a positive way.

The spirit could be fed as well as the body and people could be freer about applying their faith in their interactions with customers and employees.

Even secular eating places fold,so why would a clean, attractive, efficiently run Godly place be a riskier venture than a place with equally good food and service that serves a niche audience such as a sports bar?

I think what you're looking for is called "potluck" lunches...

Funny though, some of the busiest times for restaurants is after church on Sunday, yes.. even the ones that serve beer and used to allow smoking..

Michael, ever try Sweet Aroma in Unionville? Pretty basic menu but has the atmosphere you're seeking.

-- Posted by devan on Sat, Oct 6, 2007, at 12:02 AM

Sounds like what you are looking for already exists, it's called a monastary.

As is Las Palmas in Unionville...

No smoking, or drinking in that restaurant either....

How about these big fellowship halls in churches open up and feed others besides their own more-than-likely overweight selves?

-- Posted by countrymom on Sat, Oct 6, 2007, at 8:34 AM

Huddle House is good, but does anyone remember how good the Hobble House was about 30 years ago, and what about the old Scotsman's, where Raphael's is now. Now, THAT was the place to get good food!!

Anybody tried Lucille's Chicken and Waffles yet? I've eaten at Gladys Knights Chicken and Waffles in Atlanta and it is FANTASTIC!!!

-- Posted by cherylrichardson on Sat, Oct 6, 2007, at 8:46 AM

How about individuals in their homes prepare a meal once each week to feed someone that needs it?

-- Posted by devan on Sat, Oct 6, 2007, at 9:45 AM

I have always said that before sending money and food overseas ,we need to take care of our own first.

Even Paul said in the bible for the rich in the church to take care of the poor so when the poor got rich they could return the favor if needed.

People and churches spend to much time trying to go out and save the world when they need to change the corner where they are in their neighborhoods and when they make their corner strong then you will have more help to go to the next corner.

People say they cannot make a difference in their little corner of the world Jesus did.

Somebody had to lead your Billy Grahams and John Haggees and Perry Stones and my own Pastor Jay Pope to the Lord.

I thought this was a blog about restaurants, not ANOTHER sermon

-- Posted by dc_0725 on Sat, Oct 6, 2007, at 1:00 PM

No you didn't, really? You surely have been around these blogs long enough to know what its about if Michael started it.

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Sat, Oct 6, 2007, at 5:14 PM

Hobble house was good , never tried the Scotsman.

This wasn't a sermon just an observation.

-- Posted by michaelbell on Sat, Oct 6, 2007, at 6:05 PM

Hope you enjoyed the non smoking law.It won't be long till they tell you that you can't have your eggs and bacon.I think since coffee has caffeine in it maybe that drug will be outlawed in public places also.Just be glad you have a choice now because that can change with one law.

-- Posted by mytaxesaremine on Sun, Oct 7, 2007, at 1:08 PM

OH NO...nobody taking my bacon and coffee (starbucks) away..They may get their hand ripped off ;)

-- Posted by dc_0725 on Sun, Oct 7, 2007, at 2:38 PM

my coffee is precious to me to so is my eggs, bacon , country ham and some fresh homemade biscuits.

I just talked myself into having breakfast for supper one night this week.

For all of you sophisticated people our supper is what you call dinner.

-- Posted by michaelbell on Sun, Oct 7, 2007, at 2:52 PM

yum, I could eat breakfast foods five meals a day. I think I'm gonna try breakfast for supper one nite also.

Thanks for the idea! My hips and other areas appreciate it too. LOL

-- Posted by mmp84 on Sun, Oct 7, 2007, at 8:19 PM

Sounds like a lot of High cholesterol from all those eggs and High Blood Pressure from the salt in bacon and ham to me.

Can't be good for you :>)

-- Posted by Dianatn on Sun, Oct 7, 2007, at 9:39 PM

it probably isn't.

-- Posted by michaelbell on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 6:03 AM

well now, I am offended by the smell of country ham. Makes me sick to my stomach, I really think that restaurants shouldn't cook that when I am around. I don't like the smell getting on me and me feeling nauseous. Perhaps we can ban that?

But ya ain't taking my coffee or as mom likes to say "cocaine in a cup"

-- Posted by Vindicated on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 8:02 AM

I east at places like O'Charleys, Applebees, and other places all the time that serve alcohol and have never dealt with a drunk person. Usually those kind of restaurants have expensive drinks so it would cost a lot to get drunk and most people know that. Plus have a drink or two doesn't make one an alcoholic . . . some people are social drinkers and just have one with a meal.

I am just glad that the churches didnt have their way and keep liquor by the drink from passing or we would never have places like Chilis and Ruby Tuesday to eat at here in Shelbyville.

And really, how can anyone think the Hobble House was good. I ate there twice and regretted it later. :-P

-- Posted by jaxspike on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 8:33 AM

drink up people, the only reason people don't have to leave town any more.

-- Posted by chillint on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 10:19 AM

uh....the smoking ban is for the whole state of Tennessee, not just Shelbyville, so even if you leave town, you still can't smoke.

-- Posted by stolen25 on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 10:41 AM

I have no problem with the restraunts that serve liqour, I just wish they would have more nice family restraunts besides fast foods that did not.

-- Posted by michaelbell on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 10:59 AM

the idea is a nice one....

-- Posted by LauraSFT on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 11:24 AM

It would be nice if we had a Cracker Barrel in Shelbyville. They don't serve alcohol.

-- Posted by Richard on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 2:25 PM

They also won't build if it is not directly by an interstate : (

-- Posted by LauraSFT on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 2:33 PM

I would settle for a IHOP

-- Posted by Dianatn on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 3:22 PM

oooooh or a Denny's =]

-- Posted by stolen25 on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 5:32 PM

I personally liked Shoney's... Their company has made a turn around in profits and service, they should consider building here again... ;)

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 5:37 PM

oh yes, Shoney's..LOVE SHONEY'S BREAKFAST BAR=]

-- Posted by stolen25 on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 5:46 PM

There are Cracker Barrels not near an interstate. Pigeon Forge has two of them without an interstate close by.

-- Posted by cfder on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 5:59 PM

Well that's because that is Pigeon Forge, a major tourist attraction. 99.9% of all other Cracker Barrels are near the interstate. Most likely those 2 aren't far from a major intersection.

-- Posted by stolen25 on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 6:02 PM

They're both on the main road thru town, one on each end of town. I agree, it is because of the tourism, I have also seen them at beach locales without an interstate.

-- Posted by cfder on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 6:07 PM

I heard "small talk" of a Cracker Barrel being located close to Bell Buckle Highway or Highway 82...

Though, it seems like a great idea considering it is a high traffic area and close to many annual events held in that vicinity, I have not heard of it being confirmed or even officially being considered...

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 6:18 PM

Beaches are also tourist attractions. We really have nothing here that attracts tourist on a year round basis. Sorry but the horse show doesn't count.

-- Posted by stolen25 on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 6:19 PM

Hey, by the way.... Has anyone tried Red Robin, located close to Carabba's in Murfreesboro? They have AMAZING hamburgers... YUM! Kinda expensive, but delicious.

Dang, I want a burger now ;)

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 6:20 PM

Everyone I know that has been there likes it. I also here there is a Chic-Fil-A coming to town.

-- Posted by cfder on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 6:24 PM

Chic-Fil-A has a temporary kitchen on wheels, set up next to that new Prudential building on North Main. I wonder if that is a test for a possible brick and mortar store for the future? I HOPE SO!

-- Posted by nascarfanatic on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 6:31 PM

Hey Darrick, let's go to Red Robin's =]

-- Posted by stolen25 on Mon, Oct 8, 2007, at 6:34 PM

If it is a test, then it will probably be successful, knowing Shelbyville. I've always thought it was funny how people in Shelbyviile react when a new place opens up, especially a fast food restaurant. I remember when Krystal first opened. The place was packed for the first couple of weeks. Its like we had never seen a Krystal burger before.

But the funniest thing I can remember is when Kroger opened on North Main. There were people lined up outside the building two hours before they opened.

Police had to be called to direct traffic. People were parking four or five blocks away and walking there.

I've often wondered what the businesses must be thinking when this happens. They must think they've found a gold mine when they open in this little town, at least for the first couple of weeks.

-- Posted by LauraSFT on Tue, Oct 9, 2007, at 7:35 AM

Tried Red Robin......$9.99 for a burger and fries is ridiculous. Took forever to get it.

Then they burnt the kids pizza.

No tip.

M'boro needs an Olive Garden.

-- Posted by countrymom on Tue, Oct 9, 2007, at 3:55 PM

I have never had that experience at Red Robin, but I am sure it did happen to you...

And Murfreesboro is getting an Olive Garden, along with a TGI Friday...

At the Stones River Mall!

-- Posted by darrick_04 on Tue, Oct 9, 2007, at 4:22 PM

YAY! I'm glad you confirmed.....I had heard that.

Thanks!

-- Posted by countrymom on Tue, Oct 9, 2007, at 6:16 PM

No problem.. Being an student at MTSU, you get to hear the business professors and finance professors discuss new businesses that are on their way to M'boro. Professors are usually the first to know, due to the potential for so many job applicants... sitting in their classrooms~!

After all, MTSU, Nissan, and Verizon (just to name a few) are the culprit for M'boro growth!

I LOVE OLIVE GARDEN though!
