Posted Thursday, July 17, 2008, at 8:57 PM<< Previous | Read comments | Respond | Email link | Next >>
I just joined a gym today , my wife had to for health reasons, so I did to.
It has been since high school since I weighed 200 lbs. I weigh 260 now , my goal in a year is to lose 30 lbs. I need to get in shape for all the preaching I plan on doing later next year so keep me in your prayers. Be back Sunday with a normal blog. A Few Thoughts

Good luck with that. I could use the benefits of joining a gym myself. I hope you and your wife achieve your goals. I know it is hard to change.
Michael,
I hope you reach your weight goal. You also need to asses your diet as well for ensured success. Fatty foods (fried) and sodium intact should to reduced. Many people think diet sodas are good for you, but studies have proven that they can actually add weight. So work out, but also try to improve your diet, eat healthy food and watch your calorie intake. That and exercise should help you reach your weight goal faster than exercise alone.
Pastor Mike
Keep us posted that will help give you will power.
I have droped from 262 lbs. to 199 in 3 yr period.
YOU CAN DO IT.
Michael,
Good luck.
I don't know how thorough your gym was in orienting you and your wife to the facility or how much guidance they gave you on a program. As a personal trainer both by profession and education I would like to give you some general advice on your new endeavor.
According to the American College of Sports Medicine aka ACSM (the gold standard, especially for health releated fitness research), at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise (walking, cycling, etc) most days of the week is recommended. Moderate intensity exercise can be defined as a function of heart rate, but is more easily determined qualitatively. So if you feel like you are working( maybe have a little sweat going), but you are able to carry on a conversation, then you are where you should be. Also note that the 30 minutes MAY not be sustainable at first. If this is the case add one to three minutes weekly until you can get to this point. It may be necessary for weight loss to work up to 1 hour. As you progress you may be interested in more intense exercise.
Do not forget to strength train ( your wife should too). Twice a week on non-consecutive days, will suffice. Work every major muscle group, one set up to 15-20 repetitions to start. If you are new to lifting start light to learn proper form. Later you will be wanting to do 1-3 sets , 10-15 repetitions at a weight where the last 'rep' is nearly impossible(volitional fatigue).
I am assuming that your gym has personal trainers. Try to schedule one session with a trainer and even though it may set you back $50-$60 (not sure what the rate is here)it is money well spent. Check to see if they are certified, a degreed professional even better as any shmoe can get certified so be (the tests are criminally easy. One researcher got his dog or cat certified.)
And finally stretch afterward, pay attention to your diet(comman sense really) and do not discouraged by setbacks. Sometimes learning what does not work for you is just as valuable as learning what does.
Michael,
Also be aware that your routine will change as you progress. Never attempt to lose more that 1-2 lbs per week. The upper range should only occur at first. You may lose more , but initialy you are losing a fair amount of water. Your loss should stabilize to a lb a week . The idea is to lose fat and not fat free mass.
Good Luck Michael, I am at 238 and will be glad to get under 200 myself. I have to be really set on loosing weight for that to happen. Right now, my focus is on other things unfortunately. I wish you and your wife the Best of Luck.
Yes- with all the war, world hunger, the deaths in Africa, AIDS, natural disasters, no peace in the Middle East, homelessness and hunger in our own country, I'm sure God will gladly push all the prayers for that aside to help you lose a few pounds. Try pushing your plate away.
Pastor LMAO.
Hmm... Gluttony. As a pastor, it seems you'd know that is a sin. I have an idea on how to solve word hunger. Every time you sit down to eat, send a portion of what is on your plate to those who have nothing! Or would that involve having to prove your Christian values. It would change the tone of continual "talk" and start the cycle of action.
Thats a little uncalled for, not to mention a little childish.
But expected.
Good luck Michael. Keep at it. You can and will do it.

If it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck.. It must be a duck!
Oh but Michael, you would miss those 4 or 5 regular character assasins if they did not follow you. Even Jesus had his regulars who wanted to crucify him. Just keep out witting them as he did the Pharisees.
LOL... Lord, please help me lose weight. I'm a fat ass.
I wonder if Jesus had a boyfriend like Parkerbrothers?
Michael, maybe your next prayer request should be to help you suffer fools and idiots.
Michael,
Keep us updated on your progress! Good luck
Devan,
I think God uses fools and idiots to strengthen his followers and warriors for his coming. Michael should be well prepared after a little while longer.

Prime example... Michael himself

Prime example Michael and parkerbrothers. Or was it NOT a fool and an idiot who ran over a guy and calls himself innocent?
Vindicated,
You find it quite easy to believe in something you have not seen and only heard about in a seriously erroneous newspaper report that is soon to be held accountable.
Why does the Bible give you so much trouble to believe in? Is it because the Word is sharper than a two edged sword?
Hmm... Have you seen Jesus? NOPE. But you believe in him... What about God? It's easy to believe in something I haven't seen for myself, the wind for an example.
This has nothing to do with the Bible... I never brought it up... If only the newspaper would be held accountable, just like you. Instead of your lawyer paying off the judge for a lesser charge.
Vindicated,
Oooch, that is a serious accusation to bring against a lawyer and a judge. Hope you have proof to defend your case now.
What were those criteria for speech again?
I remember now.
"Is it true?"
"Is it necessary?"
"Is it kind?"
Could we get,at least, two out of three?
One out of three would be good to see.
#1) I don't agree with the comments here, at least he says he is going to try and lose some weight.
#2) parkerbrothers, well since how would you know what the Word of God says? Since you only eat it.
"I ate the Word of God and turned into a brother??

Evil Monkey,
That is a mystery only you can chew on to come to any understanding of it. I can not help you with sight nor hearing of this type. It is truly above me.
Michael,
How is the diet and exercise going for you and your wife? Hope it is progressing as you would like. I know it is not near as much fun taking it off as it is putting it on. Wonder why it has to be that way?
It's been 10 days... You ever gonna update your progress?
I have lost a pound and a half
That's about average... Good job. Keep it up.
michaelbell,
Look hard and focus on the sandwich in front of you and say;
I will not succumb to the bologna...
I will not succumb to the bologna...
I will not succumb to the bologna...
It works!
Michael,
Great job! Have you been exercising or watching what you eat?
