A Touchy Subject for Some

7:11 but ye say, If a man shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited by me is Corban, that is to say, Given `to God'; 7:12 ye no longer suffer him to do aught for his father or his mother; 7:13 making void the word of God by your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things ye do.
Mark 7:11-13 ASV I know I probably will get a lot of bad feedback from this blog, and not from my CRITICS ,but from my supporters, the Christian brotherhood.
A corban in the Greek means "a sacred gift" a offering of a consecrated present to the temple fund,
A lot of preachers will say that the tithes come first then the family, when Christ says just the opposite. Am I saying that a pastor or church leader should not be paid ,no, but at what expense, the church staying in the red or eventually closing it's doors?
The Pharisees taught that if you brought a corban"gift to the storehouse, you could not worry about your family and be fine, Wrong!
The tithes in the biblical days of the old testament were put in the storehouse to provide for the army and to have food during the drought and the year of jubilee when no planting was done.
There are two many in the clergy who live high on the hog while their sheep can barely get by.
There are made to feel guilty and hell bound if they don't give, and I noticed that some churches are asking for money every time the doors are opened.
Members being asked to sell things and go without to support the livelihood of the rich lifestyles of some preachers and their families.
If the church can and want to support the pastor and his family, great , but not at the expense of the mission of the church.
The mission is to win souls and help people too get closer to Christ, not to fund the lifestyles of it's leaders. You should give to the best of your ability and that shoild go to building the Kingdom of God, not the bank account of a certain few.
I would rather have food and house supplies brought in , if possible to help the needy in these hard times ahead.
I had a pastor to tell me that in his seminary days there was a class on the tithe message and how to put the guilt on the church members.

Instead of church leadership trying to get rich, they need to focus on what is going on in society and band together and change things.

This is the reason why more and more people are not going to church anymore. There's more emphasis put on money then saving souls. I think some of these churches think he who has the largest bank account will go to heaven.
Amen Sister!
That's why I prefer smaller churches . . . too many of the bigger churches focus on numbers so they can make more money.
I agree....so many times the actions of the people "in" church are a turn-off to those of us not in church, but are Christian just the same.
I feel I can monetarily support God's message in other ways. HE knows what my heart feels.
I will be coming here to visit, hope to have to some nice conversations
I tithe regularly because income is the only way the church has to help its members in times of need.I tithe the very first thing out of my paycheck, regardless. The pastors job is a huge undertaking. most pastors doing it because its kingdom work and not just a job, work over 12hrs a day 6-7 days a week. He deserves to be compensated for that, because he does not have the time to have a regular job. Its more than just preaching a sermon 3 times a week. I agree that some pastors are doing it for the money and they preach on and on and on about giving.
If it came down to feeding my family or tithing, then I would of course feed my family. The ox does get in the ditch sometimes.
YOU are correct man! If people only knew what the differences are in the OLD covenant and the NEW covenenant. Most people churches take the salad bar approach to both!
TrulyL,
I love your analogy to the salad bar. A great many people do pick and choose what they want to believe in the bible don't they?
Regarding pastor pay, it is likely that many have massive student loan bills. It is not unheard of for a church pastor/minister/priest to have an advanced degree or two.
I believe a nice salary is fair compensation. Heck, how many people actually work on Sunday. For this profession , it just part of the job.
Are they learning man's doctrines or the ones of the Living God?
I heard my preacher say recently from the pulpit that we need new members because we need the tithe. He went on to say that we have recently lost several families in our church for one reason or another and that is why our tithe's are down. It sadden me that my church is now a business as I had never seen it that way before. I too want new people coming to my church but not because we WANT or NEED their money.
If God calls you to preach he would not want you to go into debt to do it, that is mans way. But what really suprises me is in these big churches everyone is paid for what they do : clerk, secretary, treasurer, song leader, pianist, organist, full band, youth pastor and probably more that I don't know about. God gave you that talent, doesn't anyone volunteer anymore? This is why they are preaching at you for more money. My husband went to the Southern Baptist Ass. meeting to hire another Director. One preacher said we are already over budget how are we going to pay this man this salary and the preacher conducting the meeting said everyone will just have to ask their members to give more money. Needless to say that was the first and last meeting my husband went to. And now churches are buying those electronic signs at 20 to 35 thousand dollars each, just think of how many families could be helped in Bedford County with that much money.
