The Roots of My Faith.

Posted Sunday, March 22, 2009, at 12:27 PM

I have been on a search for "the roots of my faith" and I have discovered that that root is none other than Abraham for he was the first called of God to be set apart for him and to be the Father of the Jewish faith which without that root there would be no Christianity. Judaism does not need Christianity but without Judaism, Christianity has no roots!

In learning this I did a long research on Abraham and discovered that he is the perfect poster boy for the Jewish faith as well as the Christian faith.

First off he name was originally Abram, which means [high or exalted father]he came from the genealogy of Shem who was the son of Noah who was found grace in the eyes of the Lord, Noah was also the only one who had not defiled himself with the offspring of the Nephillim and for this God saved him and his family which would eventually lead to Abram.

God called Abram to get away from his kinsman and away from his fathers house, for one reason they were idol worshipers and God was setting the stage for worship of him and only him.

As usual when God calls on someone to do something he gives strict orders and Abram disobeyed, he took his nephew Lot with him .

Lot 's name means to be "concealed or veiled" which this kept Abram from getting the full blessings until he removed that veil, not until the Cross did the veil completely go away which allows the full blessings of God which is his Son Jesus Christ who died for us to bring us back to our Father's presence.

Abram lied about his wife as he said she was his sister for he did not have the faith in God to let him make the way so the blessings were still withheld, he was more concerned for his life and well being..

There come a point of fighting between the two factions and Abram proposed that they part ways, but he gave Lot the first choice, so Lot looked down and saw the fertile land of Sodom, knowing how the people were did not matter to him, I guess you could use today's phrase "he thought the grass was greener on the other side" only because of the sewage that the lifestyles there put out.

As in today's time, don't choose a church or a home based on looks or because of the neighborhood for looks can be deceiving.

After the veil[lot] was removed from Abram did God reaffirm his promise to him to give him all the land and to make him a father of many nations.

Even though Abram disobeyed God he still kept his promise to make Abram a great nation and a leader of a great nation needs a son to carry on the leadership which alas! Abram did not have and at his advanced age and Sarai they had no hope , but God will always provide a way

One has to wonder what it would have been like if Abram would of done what God said and Lot would of never went went with him, but as usual man does not listen to God, so God allows trials and tribulations to befall him to teach him and to bring him back, till tomorrow and part 2 of the "Roots of My Faith"

You know Abraham cannot will not be the root of the Christian faith. See you have to ahve the understanding of what a root really is and its true function. You look at a plant the root is the source of the plants life, it cannot live without the root. Christ call himself the bread of life, the living water. So as a christian where do we get our source of life from the Lord himself, Not Abraham. The Lord him self sad have faith in me for no man can come unto the father but by me. Abraham never would have seen the father if it wasn't for Christ and his death bariul and reserection. The Christian faith did not every start with anyone but the authur of the Faith Jesus Christ him self. And finnally anyone that is a true christian should not have to be hunting for their root of faith. Because a true christian knows from the moment of their salvation that the root is Christ himself and if it wasn't for him we would not have any christian faith.

True, but without Abraham and the Jewish faith we would not have our Christianity, for there would have been no law, sacrifice for the atonement of sins.

Especially the ultimate sacrifice which was Jesus Christ, so you see my friend, the root does go to Abraham.

My faith was never in question, but I did want to know what and why I believed what I did, not from man telling me , but from the bible, other writings, and yes the "Holy Spirit himself.

Jesus completed the work started by God from before time began.

You left out Islam, which can also be traced back to Abraham. It's amazing that the violence and hatred we see today between jews, christians, and muslims were born of the same teachings from a man called Abraham.

Abraham pimped out his wife to the pharaoh, started a war, tricked Lot into buying lake front property in Sodom, and knocked up his maid. Why is this guy is the patriarch of 3 great religions?

Oh, and you left out the part where God told Abraham that he, along with all of the males in his household, needed to mutilate their penises. It must have been a bloody and painful night at the Abraham house.

True!Everything you said was true, but God still chose him, we do all that we do wrong and he still chooses us, live by faith , not by sight.

It is interesting that Abraham is chosen as the topic to begin your research in to your roots of "Christian" faith. Of course, this is true in the Jewish/Islamic/Christian faiths but without basis in other religions.

Abraham-was not the beginning, however, it is the start for covenants given to him by the creator, which do impact our world of today. The song of Moses (Deut.32:1-43) will explain to you why it is important biblically to remember. There is a tremendous amount of history that can be learned from the torah about God, "the Rock" of our faith.

The Spanish-American philospher, George Santayana said, "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." I personally do not wish to run a foul of God, by repeating the mistakes of my ancestors.

You are correct in starting with Abraham, because he is recognized as the first Jew. A point to remember is Gen. 12:1-3. He was picked and separated, then told in verse 3 "I will bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you, and through you, will be blessed all the families of the earth." So, this is the starting point for the whole earth. The "calling of Abraham" the root, as picked by God.

Richard,

I think the problem is the Islamic faith thought and still think Ishmael was the child of promise.

Their biggest err is their view of Christ. Although they do acknowledge Jesus they mistakingly view Him as a prophet instead of the Child of Promise.

They "want" their choice.

They "need" God's choice.

Each clay pot is the work of the potter.

The potter is not the work of the pot.

Revelation 22:16 states "I Jesus sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star."

So Jesus stated right here even though he is the offspring of David a Jew. He is the root not Abraham.

Abraham became the father of nations but,as I recall,God was ready to make sons of Abraham out of pebbles,if necessary.

Our DNA matters less than the infusion of the Holy Spirit into our hearts.

That is what makes us part of God's family and kin to one another.

In that sense,we are truly descended from the Rock of Ages that a sinless God threw at all us sinners to save us.

When we asked for a stone to become a wordly Messiah, our Father gave us the Bread of Life.

I understand that the word "radical" means "root".

Maybe,we are all meant to be "radicals" like Christ (the Root of Jesse).

We could confine our likeness to Jesus to long hair, robes, sandals, turning tables on the users and giving a rallying call for peace.

Or,we could strive to act in accordance to the values that have been passed down to all the religions that trace their heritage to Abraham.

We could do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God.

We could honor the Word that existed before time and space and that has been made available to all flesh.

God has always taken the lowliest and most flawed parts of His Creation to form His greatest works.

Whether He makes Order out of Chaos, humans out of clay,a Savior from the bloodlines of criminals or wise leaders out of foolish victims, the story of His relationship with us is one of making something wonderful out of the worthless or unlikely and making one in Him that which sin has cursed with divisions of fear, ignorance and hate.

While we study where we came from,we need to be mindful that God is still at work and our part of His plan has barely begun.

Knowing our history can tell us where we've been but listening to the Lord with our hearts can help us make history as we are led to where we're going.

A lot less.

The Great Infusion is everything.

All -

The "roots" of all of our faith can be traced back to Genesis 1:1. Wouldn't it be interesting to hear how we all came to accept Christ as our own personal Savior? I believe that personal testimonies reveal God's love, character, and grace and can impact folks just like us who are striving to make it day by day.

How 'bout it Michael? What about an online testimonial blog???
