hey a real good free anti virus is AVG from Grisoft.com
I have used this for years and it is better than the Pay-for ones.
Thanks for the great links I am going to try the file shredder one.
I love AVG I have used it and spybot for years also.
The online features of my MS Money are about to run out, so I'm delighted to find out about AceMoney. I'm already sold on OpenOffice and The GIMP.
I am aware of AVG Free Antivirus and it is a pretty good virus scanner that has some great features like scheduled scans and e-mail scanning. For most users this program is effective FREE protection. There is one situation that I have found AVG Free ineffective, households with teenage children. If you give your average teenager a freshly formatted computer they will have that machine infected with the latest viruses within hours and sometimes minutes. For this reason I recommend a commercial virus scanner in any household with a teenager in it.
I find it surprising that Firefox isn't on the list. I'd say that Firefox has been downloaded many more times that the Gimp or OO.org
Firefox is great. I use it. I didn't include it because I have had some minor issues with Internet Explorer after uninstalling Firefox. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens.
Another VERY useful link is www.giveawayoftheday.com. This site has a different program every day that normally would cost anywhere from ten bucks to several hundred, and they have it on here for free to download. The only requirement is that you download, install, and activate it by 2am that night. Sometimes they have real gems on there. It's worth checking out. They advertise that all of the software on here is 100% adware/spyware free, but you will still want to pay close attention to the installation options to avoid installing browser objects that could capture your surfing habits or drive you batty with pop-up ads. I've had one of each of these and I've been going here for a while now. It's just a precaution though. Anyway, great ideas for free stuff Nathan. Thanks.
one more for the list... comodo personal firewall http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ works great if you need a firewall; and who doesn't
TrendMicro has a free online virus scanner if you don't want to download any actual programs: http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/
I use it along with the AVG that Nathan.Evans referred to.
Also, a couple of really good spyware removal programs:
Adaware SE http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaw...
And Spybot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index...
will help keep your computers running smoothly, for free!
I personally only recommend using commercial, pay for use virus scanners and spyware/adware removers. I highly recommend Trend Micro Internet Security. It is a complete security suite that takes care of your antivirus detection and removal, spyware/adware detection and removal, firewall, spam filtering, and much more. Free scanners like AVG, Spybot, and Adaware do not detect the newest malware on the internet. I have installed commercial scanners on systems using these free detectors and discovered harmful programs installed including a keylogger and a rootkit. If you enter information like social security numbers or credit card numbers on your computer please use a commercial virus scanner and not a free virus scanner.
Well that is very odd seeing as how it has been independently certified by softpedia.com and has the verified logo directly on the download page. Did you notice the firewall warning that contains information about some firewalls reacting to Cobian Backup during the installation? I would say you are experiencing a problem related to that or you already had a bug on your computer to begin with. Either way I installed it and was unable to recreate your issue. Cobian is a safe download. Thanks!
Out of curiosity Revolution, did your virus scanner go crazy during the install or while you were running a backup?
