If you asked my friends what my number one hobby is they would probably tell you video games. I have been playing games online since the time I got my first 2400 baud modem in 1993. Back then the games were mainly text based like Trade Wars and Legend of the Red Dragon. My first taste of multiplayer first person shooters was a classic that many of you may have heard of called Doom. Turns out that blasting your co-worker in the next cubical with a shotgun is really fun.

Today's games are highly detailed and allows players to connect from all over the world. Currently I play Unreal Tournament 2004 and FEAR online. There are different servers with all kinds of different gametypes from Free For All Deathmatch to Capture the Flag. My favorite gametypes on UT2004 are Arenamaster which is like playing last man standing and Freon which is like a version of freeze tag. Online you will find servers that a specific clan owns. A clan allows you to play in a more organized team environment where different clans play each other sometimes for prizes. Clan members share tips and tricks with each other and generally just have fun playing against each other.

Why am I even talking about all this? I think it would be fun if there was a Bedford County Gamers Club where local players can talk about new games and hardware, and also compete against each other for prizes in local LAN parties. The club would also be a good place to sell old video cards and such that may be better than what some of the others have. If anyone is interested in this idea please reply to this post and if there is enough interest in the idea we'll see if we can't get more organized with a website and actual meetings.

That sounds great!

The basic concept needn't be confined to any one form of gaming or certain kinds of players.

There could be LAN players in one group and board or card game players in another.

Offline RPG's and miniatures games could be available, too.

There could be gaming clubs for all types and tastes that might bring people who would otherwise stay strangers together.

Start with your original premise and see where that leads.

I think thats a great idea. I havent played many games on the internet, except stuff like yahoo pool, or some card games. I am a big console gamer though, so it would be nice if there was a place for us.

L.O.R.D.?!? Man, that brings back memories of sitting up LATE at night thinking "It doesn't get any better than this"...and at that time, it didn't.

World of War Craft. My brother loves this game. Have you played it Nathan? You may like it.

Yes I have played World of Warcraft. I made it to level 52 and the game began getting somewhat tedious for me. Graphically the game is stunning and the number of players online at any given time is amazing. Personally I prefer the action of first person shooters.

LOTRO is alot more stunningly graphical than WoW. Pirates of the Burning Sea is pretty fun and tommorrow, Age of Conan goes on sale. Which is probably going to be my vice.

The game that originally hooked me was by Sierra. I played Heroes Quest and all 4 sequels. Fantastic for its time. Now playing City of Heroes/City of Villains, heading into my 5th year on line with it. Got hooked when I was very ill and could not do anything else. Have met people from all over the world and have come to a conclusion. Most people are basically decent. It's the leadership thats the pits. Thank Goodness I'm retired so I can indulge my addiction.

That is very interesting. I have never heard of City of Heroes. I have played World of Warcraft a little getting to level 52 and then getting bored with it. I also tried out Eve Online which is graphically stunning, but I found myself falling asleep in front of it a little too often due to the long amount of time required to traverse the universe. This was also a problem with World of Warcraft. The worlds are so large that you find yourself doing a lot of tedious traveling.
