Argument 101Posted Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at 9:01 AM
Recently on Steve Mills' Blog Post Please help me understand Mr. Obama's personal secrecy the comment below, highlighting how certain "news" organizations (don't worry, all of the 24/7 networks are guilty of it) distort the truth to gain support and ratings, got me thinking.
President Obama presented his birth certificate in June of last year. It has been certified as real. Check out Snopes.com. All of this is just another gestapo style attempt by the far right to smear the opposition. They do this to avoid any meaningful debate on issues and to vilify their opposition. Take time and check facts and quit watching Faux News.

Having watched these "news" networks and read many of the arguments and points passed on this site, I wanted to post a link to a page that will help you cut through the nonsense (see below). Debating is fun and persuasion is a very useful skill to perfect, so keep speaking your mind and beware of the fallacies that lurk at every corner. No matter what anyone thinks, being able to voice your opinions is always a good thing! Comments Showing most recent comments first [Show in chronological order instead] |

Be advised that I've elicited more laughs from my cooking than my poetry. ;)
You may take your pick, but if I am to know you by your pies, I must experience one for myself.
Would that be Pope as in Martinus Scriblerus or Pope as in the proprietor of the cafe' with the John Norton hot dog?
Either way,I'm flattered.
I'd be honored if I were ever known for satirical couplets or homemade pies.
"True journalism is grounded in reality." Your optimism never fails to impress me. Hope springs eternal - & from QC. I hope you do not mind the comparison, but your comments do remind me a little of Pope.
I am impressed with the conversation in here. Who would have thought people could have intelligent, fact-based dialogue when discussing hot political topics? Thank all of you, even the ones with whomI don't agree. ;)
Oh dear,I hope that particular development doesn't occur.
As a cost-cutting measure,Mr.Murdoch et al might decide to limit news to that which could feature eye candy in glamorous settings.
Hard, political news could turn into Palin and Schwartzenegger offering the latest G.O.P. spin garbed in leather or swimwear.
Our leaders would face getting into hot oil rather than hot water.
The plus side of such a turn would be that fewer publicity seekers would resort to terrorism if their hard work could be bumped by a report on Ashley's (Olsen,Tisdale,Greene) pedicure.
Sure,NOW we can have pics of Glen Beck looking like an 80's Dr. Who but let the page 3 mentality kick in and Greg Gutman will rule.

Muammar al-Quaddafi will get media attention due to a perceived resemblance to Lawrence Olivier and Tom Tryon with little mention of Libya or his alleged ties to President Obama.
True journalism is grounded in reality.
It is not grounded by sensationalism that removes both the left and right wings and serves nothing but breasts and thighs.
Perhaps,Dean Ornish and PETA could join forces against the tabloid invasion.
The anti-carb doctor could urge us to reject the bread while the animal rights advocates could protest the circuses.
Evil Monkey, I agree only somewhat with your comment. Murdoch admittedly retains much editorial influence in his business. However, while Fox is decidedly republican tinted, it is more heavily shaded with sensationalism, and an appeal to those with short attention spans (and apparently even shorter memories). Tabloid journalism with an educated conservative facade, one could not ask for a better delivery system of propaganda. If only he would bring back the page 3 girls, he would have a lock.
Dr. Philbilly,
Fox News is PURE republican. Look at what Bush did and they never ONCE questioned his administration. PULEEASE don't think they are non-biased, they care completely lost their credibility for years.
Snopes is just one website to verify facts. There are various others. Snopes can be used as a starting point in general.
In esponse to GoTitans, are those people called "trolls" on the Internet?
That reminded me of the story told sometime ago about this guy who didn't believe in the Holocaust. He said he wouldn't believe it unless he saw it in black-and-white, so they showed him in black-and-white. He responded that it was faked. You just can't argue with people like that as you'll never win.
Personally I do not care for snopes.com they use the exact same resources you can use which aren't always correct. When looking at snopes.com about Obama you have to understand they are using the media as their resource and we all know how well that works. They do not have any other information other than what has already been put out there. You either choose to believe it at face value or you don't.
People have been asking for years who is snopes.com and there are several websites out there about them... but take those with a grain of salt also.
Most news networks are in the tank for Obama other than Fox News. I think most Americans have figured that out.
The best way to respond to many of the posts is simply to ignore them. So many of the posts (on both sides) have no substance and don't really contribute to any useful discourse.
I have never used Snopes.com for fact checking. It's notoriously inaccurate because there is no way anyone could track down every fact that on the 1 trillion web pages that are out there. In almost every case there is a true source that you can go to.
Be respectful, be accurate.
Nathan
For some people no matter how many facts you give them they are too blinded by rage and their closed minds to ever listen to the facts. It's like talking to a brick wall.
Good to see you posting blogs again...it's a nice counter to the 3-4 "Obamahate" blogs that get posted here every day.
