Well, it has finally happened to me. Yesterday the mail brought a letter from the SafeStreets program in M'boro. It showed a series of pictures taken by an automatic traffic camera: an intersection at two separate moments, and a close-up of a license plate. There my Jeep sat, frozen in time, in the middle of the intersection, turning left, with two bright red lights on the signals above me. It took some time, then I remembered that afternoon a couple of weeks ago driving to dinner in the 'Boro. I wasn't in a hurry, but I remember a light that changed VERY quickly from yellow to red before I got thru my turn. I wonder whether the other two cars in the intersection in the photo also got this letter. I will pay the citation (only $50! thought it could be much more), but I am reminded of a story I heard once. A man gets a letter with a citation and photos of his violation. Angry, he sends a photo of his fine payment to the police. A few days later, he gets a letter with a photo of handcuffs. He paid the fine.

Us and Them
Posted Thursday, June 12, at 11:58 AM

"Down and out; it can't be helped but there's alot of it about" Roger Waters and countless artists and philosophers before him have struggled to reconcile two immutable but paradoxical phenomena: the inevitable unification of mankind, and his stubborn willingness to allow war, schism, and the corruption of religion to impede unity...

Best Book Ever Written
Posted Wednesday, April 23, at 10:20 AM

I was a subscriber to a little auto-delivery book service called the 100 Greatest Books Ever Written. I have, on my shelves, and mostly unread (sadly) these books. The standards are all there: War and Peace, Anna Karenina, Pride and Prejudice, Robinson Crusoe, the Greek tragedies, Plato, etc. But who decided these were the Greatest Books ever?...

Bait and Switch, or Here Goes Again

Today I learned that Michael Vick will get to retain the bonus money given to him by the Atlanta Falcons when he signed the contract to be their quarterback...amounting to double digit millions of dollars. So...Michael Vick is made a scapegoat by violating a questionable law (my opinion regarding this is well-documented in a previous blog) that is violated by many others daily, and goes to jail. ...

The Greatest!
Posted Sunday, February 3, at 9:09 PM

What a game it was! Eli Manning, on the shoulders of one of the greatest defensive efforts ever, has taken the Giants to victory over the "unbeatable" Patriots! And how about that 30 yard catch and "unsack"! Super Bowl XLII is in the books, and certainly one of the Greatest Super Bowls ever...

The Greatest?
Posted Sunday, February 3, at 10:42 AM

Well, today is the big day. Arguably the greatest professional football quarterback will helm what could be one of the greatest teams in NFL history in Super Bowl XLII. The Patriots will cement their status as a dynasty with a victory. But, what a great story - the greatest - if young Eli Manning, downtrodden, inexperienced, frustrated quarterback of the Giants at midseason, can engineer one of the greatest upsets in Super Bowl history...

Discipline

Bedford County is bristling with the "School Attire" debate, and I would like to take this opportunity to express my thoughts on this important issue. It is important because it is about more than just what the students wear, it is about attitude - respect - discipline...

Doctor's Bills; a Primer
Posted Tuesday, November 27, at 10:01 PM

This is not an editorial. I am just taking a few moments to let folks know about how a Doctor (not a Hospital - that is a completely different story) bills patients. First, some history. In the old days, not so long ago, Doctors would come into town, put up a shingle, and begin a practice of caring for his patients and their families. ...

My Appendix Exploded!!
Posted Wednesday, October 31, at 11:50 AM

I think it is time we had a crash course on that famous anatomic and diagnostic enigma, the appendix. The appendix is a muscular tube the diameter of a standard pencil and of variable length located at the very beginning of the colon, where the small intestine dumps our unneeded food goo so that poop can be formed. It has no known critical function. You can find a picture of it here...

OK, Here Goes...

At the risk of being more controversial than I would like, please allow me to express my thoughts on the subject of life, pets and "animal cruelty". Some preliminary declarations: I own and love an Italian Greyhound named Spike and a house cat named Socks; I am allergic to cats (o my if I rub my eyes after petting Socks!), but i am willing to make this sacrifice for my children and our cat...
