It's HOT!

Posted Wednesday, August 15, 2007, at 11:56 AM

Some things I have noticed about the weather and other atmospheric phenomena since moving to Middle TN:

1. In one week, there will be at least 6 brilliant sunsets regardless of the weather.

2. Weather forecasts tend to be pretty accurate. I guess this is because we are not near a large body of water. Lake Erie and the Gulf of Mexico seem to give meteorologists nightmares.

3. I will tolerate hot weather much more than cold...thus I have enjoyed the heat recently.

4. The old phrase "At least it's a dry heat" is true. During the last week or so there have been some days when the heat index was lower than the actual temperature, indicating that the humidity was low.

5. This is great put-the-top-down-on-the-Jeep weather.

6. The heat can also be dangerous. Don't be a hero...get out of the heat and replenish the fluids frequently.

I like the hotter weather also.. my ex always told me I'd freeze to death in hell. (not sure I'd go quite that far though) I do know when it gets below 60 degrees I am ready to turn the heat on..:>)

I for one love this weather we've been having! I often tell my husband I want to move south where it's warm! He laughs & tells me I am in the south now. Oh well.

Another tip: If you are wearing shorts, be sure you've left no spare change laying in your front car seat for any length of time...

YEEEOUCH!!!!

Another true fact about Middle Tennessee weather: If the tiniest shower pops up TV weathercasters will go into danger mode and act if our lives are threatened. That may be causing some viewers to not take warnings of actual storm threats as seriously.

Doc, A few responses to your items listed above:

2. The weather reports are always right because if there's a cloud in the sky they say "40% chance of scattered showers"...their station reaches all of Middle TN, there's bound to be rain somewhere...if there are clouds around.

3. A little heat is one thing, but I can certainly handle the cold better than the heat. When it's cold, you can always put more clothes on...when it's hot, there are only so many clothes you can take off before they arrest you.

4. A dry heat is fine, it's like being in an oven rather than a sauna. You're not as sweaty, and people look at you funny for wearing that towel around.

6. Hydrating is the most important thing you can do if you're going to be out. Particularly if you're going to be consuming alcohol. A really good rule of thumb in these temps is one beer, one water, one beer, one water. Or as we used to say in the Navy "If your pee isn't clear, stop drinking the beer". That was mainly for when we were sitting in Dubai drinking in 120 degree heat. That's the only place that I've ever been where it actually gets hotter and muggier at night.

All kidding aside, that is GREAT advice Doc. Hot weather will kill you quicker than cold weather will. And you might not even realize it if you're out on a boat in the heat drinking.
