If you could go anywhere in Tennessee for the weekend to celebrate Valentine's day, where would you go and why? I am looking for some ideas to share with our readers in our upcoming Valentine's Day section?
Shrek juice isn't just for ogres
To me this is liquid magic, to my daughter Dani Rae it's Shrek juice. A smoothie with spinach, banana, clementine, almond milk and a scoop of protein. What are your favorite smoothies? I'd like to gather up a good list of recipes and run them in the newspaper, so please, send them all my way!...
Intensity or LSD?
Last week I wrote about some differences in today's recommended diets. Many experts recommend higher amounts of lean proteins and lots of veggies and fruits. A little fat is OK, as are whole grains (in moderation). But white, starchy carbohydrates like white rice, pasta and potatoes are a big no except on special occasions...
The dark side of white stuff
When I began paying better attention to my lifestyle a couple of months ago, I knew I was quite out of shape and it would take me some time to get back into the swing of things. I am 33 years old now, and although rusty, eating right and exercise is certainly nothing new to me. ...
No excuses, do the work
My late uncle Mike could often be heard saying "no excuses, do the work," in hopes of motivating his student athletes to reach their fullest potential. Uncle Mike was a beloved English teacher and running coach who dedicated himself to his family, students and athletes his entire life, until he was taken from us at far too young of an age after losing a very long battle to lung cancer. (A runner himself, Mike never smoked a day in his life.)...

Smell the memories
In celebration of Grandparents Day next month, I am looking for special recipes that connect you to your grandparents. What is that special dinner that your grandmother made every time you visited or on special occasions? I want to know the stories behind those recipes, and, if you're a grandparent and have a favorite recipe you enjoy making when the little ones are over, we'd like to hear from you, too!...

Champagne wishes ...
Is Valentine's Day a cliche' or do people actually celebrate it? If you're one of the lucky ones, what has been your best Valentine's memory. If you're a dreamer, what are you hoping for this year? I've long since moved past being a hopeless romantic. Now I am just hopeless. Who needs champagne, fondue, fireside dinner for two ... Massages, foot rubs, diamonds or pearls? All that takes away from the 8 hours of sleep I'm wishing for!...
Pray for Korley
As the community comes together in prayer for Korley Davis, how are you showing your support personally? Many folks are displaying their support with green and yellow ribbons. One group of friends is planning a fundraiser to be held at Calsonic Feb. 11...
Coupons? Yes or no?
There's been lots of talk about coupons lately. For me, I'm not sure I'm the couponing type (check out my column Sadie Says in this coming Sunday's Life & Leisure. We have a new coupon expert, Ann Haney, of Bedford County, who is being featured each Sunday in Life & Leisure, also. For those of you into couponing, or those of you who want to be into couponing, she will be starting with the basics, giving several "how to" tips each Sunday...
Do you or does anyone you know celebrate Boxing Day-the day after Christmas? I believe it is mainly a "bank holiday" celebrated by those in the United Kingdom. I know of one local family who celebrate this holiday and basically it is an extension of Christmas and a day of organizing, "boxing up" and family fun...
Goodbye cookies ... thanks, Jean
I love the holidays, when we let go of diets and restrictions and make way for sweet potato casserole and Christmas cookies -- special Christmas cookies, like those made by Jean Raby. Ms. Jean, of Normandy, has been baking up a storm for the last few decades. ...
