Boxing Day

Posted Thursday, December 16, 2010, at 3:00 PM

Do you or does anyone you know celebrate Boxing Day-the day after Christmas? I believe it is mainly a "bank holiday" celebrated by those in the United Kingdom. I know of one local family who celebrate this holiday and basically it is an extension of Christmas and a day of organizing, "boxing up" and family fun.

I never knew there was an official Boxing Day. There are 2 "Boxing" days at my house every year. Each require my boys to come home for a few hours. The first is the day after Thanksgiving to bring all the "boxes" containing the years of Christmas decorations down from the attic. The second being the day after New Year's to carry the same "boxes" back to the attic until next year's "Boxing" day.

My understanding was that Boxing day was actually the day that the children opened their presents.

In my family Boxing Day is always celebrated - we would all get up early to go shopping. My mom and I still do it.

We moved here from England many years ago. Boxing day was celebrated the day after Christmas. It was the day the kids played with there new toys, the parents ate leftovers from the Christmas Dinner. Custard and plum pudding was always served. (We still follow that tradition today). It was a day of relaxation after the hurry of Christmas day cooking and baking.
