My late uncle Mike could often be heard saying "no excuses, do the work," in hopes of motivating his student athletes to reach their fullest potential.
Uncle Mike was a beloved English teacher and running coach who dedicated himself to his family, students and athletes his entire life, until he was taken from us at far too young of an age after losing a very long battle to lung cancer. (A runner himself, Mike never smoked a day in his life.)
I think of Uncle Mike a lot, and those words he used to say all the time.
I had always enjoyed a healthy lifestyle, up until I had a baby a few years ago.
Then everything I knew about eating right and exercising went flying out the window as I attempted to balance motherhood and a busy career.
About a month or two ago it hit me like a ton of bricks. I had been making excuses, and certainly not doing the work. Too tired, too busy, not enough time. The fact that I came last in my life became everyone's fault but my own.
I began paying attention a little more and making time for exercise again. As I read and hear about some of the latest advice in the world of nutrition and exercise it's amazing how some things have changed over the last couple of decades.
One thing that's basically the same, however, is in order to be effective (long-term) with any type of diet/exercise or health plan, you've got to be at a point where you're committed to a lifestyle change, not a fad diet.
I don't believe in fad diets, and I definitely don't make New Year's resolutions I can't stick to, however, I am making it a personal goal to blog a little more as I shed excuses and explore some of the fun and new things I'm learning about an old and familiar subject.
