  • EXACTLY!!!!

I do not draw Social Security but I know many who do and they live on bare minimum now, the loss of one check means losing everything. I resigned to the fact by the time I get old enough to draw Social Security there will be no such animal and everything I have put into the system will be in the pockets of some White House bigwig.. I have come to terms with the fact I will have to work until the day I fall into the grave and i am ok with that fact (or I might as well be anyway)

How could taking these people's money benefit our economy?? How can Obama even think such a thing and still look at himself in the mirror?

Some experts are calling this a scare tactic but I ask you who is he trying to scare?? The elderly and the veterans? Com'on now don't they have enough to fear with just trying to get by?

If he wants to do some cutting Start with cutting Foreign Aid!!!

  • $14K each month? Maybe politics IS worth the hassle.

-- Posted by stevemills on Tue, Jul 12, 2011, at 10:31 PM
  • And who elected Obama?--Hope he has made all of you proud. Has he threatened to stop any welfare checks?

I have been paying taxes, medicare and SS since 1981. It is ridiculous to punish those of us who have been supporting the govt all our working lives.

-- Posted by tbdyer on Wed, Jul 13, 2011, at 7:52 AM
  • I agree Dianatn. On the news recently, they were stating that the US is holding over $8 million dollars which was going to Pakistan in foreign aid. The US needs to stop worrying about everyone else and take care of home first.

And you know that the politicians will get their checks no matter what. Why won't the politicians forfeit the paychecks for a month or two or take a pay cut? The answer: because it affects them. I realized when I was in high school and taking a government study class that basically 99% of politicians are for themselves and for the rich who line their pockets. Once they are elected, they no longer care about the "little people".

As for the SSI checks. That is what I was talking about in another post. SSI was suppose to be for those who work and pay in. However, today people that get out of prison can get a SSI check. As well as people who claim they are too overweight, drug users, etc. The only people that are suppose to be getting the checks are people who have paid in.

As for the threat of delaying the checks - is just that, a threat. It is suppose to scare them into making the decisions and work together. However, I don't think Obama is going to get what he wants (even though he has gotten everything else ex. Obamacare). Obama knows that the election is coming around and he has to play the hero and try to get the votes. But I honestly, don't think that his threats are going to work this time.

  • $8 million dollars to Pakistan in foreign aid is just a drop in the bucket of the aid we are supplying.. every dime of foreign aid needs to stop Now!! If and when America can stand on it's own two feet then maybe just maybe we can help other countries but not one minute before.

-- Posted by Dianatn on Wed, Jul 13, 2011, at 9:23 AM
  • Once again the All Mighty O wants to make people who he thinks is beneath him do the suffering - the very people that supplies his monthly $33k. I am not one to brag, but this is one time I will - "I certainly did NOT vote for him!" Not only take a long hard look at the foreign aid that leaves our country, but look at all the benefits handed out to the in-coming illegals that demand the same things as those in our own back yards that have worked and struggled all their lives to reach that age when they can finally rest and have a small smidigen of what they paid into the program all their working years. Big O needs to take a step back and cut his own expenses that come from our tax dollars - like all the family trips all over the world.

  • While I have never been a fan of Obama, I would have never thought he could reach this low by using social security checks as a form of political extortion in hopes of getting his way. He should be ashamed of himself for using such a sad and pathetic tactic and try and scare individuals who have worked all their lives and paid into the system and then have to worry if they are going to get their investment back.

-- Posted by jaxspike on Wed, Jul 13, 2011, at 12:10 PM
  • Foreign aid takes less than 1% of federal spending, while social security comprises 20%. Even if we cut all foreign aid (which would have bad national security consequences), it would have little effect on our budget.

About 50 billion in SS checks are due in August. 7.5 million in congressional salary would pay about .00015% of the tab.

Kind of a silly comparison don't you think?

-- Posted by Oliver Klozzoff on Wed, Jul 13, 2011, at 12:15 PM
  • Hear, Hear! It's time for a change from the CHANGE! More than half the voters got on that "CHANGE" bandwagon (not me), but now you know what that change meant:

    More DEBT

    More TAXES

    More WELFARE

    More REGULATION

    More GOVERNMENT

    More WASTEFUL SPENDING

    More CORRUPTION

And why not pick on the elderly and disabled, so that the politicians can still submit their 'expense' sheets for $1,000 lunches, high-dollar "escorts," 30 mile helicopter flights, etc. Rather than put a reign on some of that wasteful spending in Washington!!???

I hope you've all come to your senses and vote Obama out in the next election. If not, imagine what we'll be left with after another 4 year term...?

Thanks for posting this Rodney, it saved me the trouble of writing it. Although it did prompt me to write this instead:

  • Oliver Klozzoff- I wasn't trying to state that the salaries could come close to covering social security. The fact is that the government never can seem to find anything that it can cut from the budget except things that affect a large number of Americans. They only do it to scare people and to turn people against the other party. They have shown no serious effort to eliminate anything from the budget.

-- Posted by Rodney Simmons on Wed, Jul 13, 2011, at 12:42 PM
  • How much of that 50 billion due in august is collected in July from Social Security payroll deductions?

-- Posted by Dianatn on Wed, Jul 13, 2011, at 12:51 PM
  • Oliver Klozzoff . . . what I find silly is that Social Security was suppose to be set up sort of like an investment in which taxpayers would pay in a certain amount and then when the time came, people could start drawing from it but now they are being told all the money they have paid in has magically disappeared? In the financial world, some would call the embezzlement. How would you feel if you had made investments with a stock broker and then in several years when it came time for retirement, he told you that you had no investment left because he decided he wanted to buy a new house on an exotic island somewhere and used your money to do it with? I am sure you would definitely not be happy with that scenario and that is how Obama and Congress are playing it out now.

So any comparison being made in the comments are not silly . . . they just point out how government truly does not know how to budget what it makes and spends and what is priority and how Obama is holding social security recipients hostage for political gain.

  • My husband and I are both retired seniors. We live on SS Checks. Since there is so many seniors who depend on that money that we paid into this account why should the government be using it for anything else? I think it is time that we seniors start taking things in hand a put a stop to these money grabbing politicians. We should vote for a bill where the politician can only serve for 8 years same as the President. We should not be paying them all that salary after they leave office and they should be paying their

FICA portion of their payroll checks. They keep talking about the wealthy well why don't they look in the mirror. Both sides should stop their fighting like children and do what the American people want and that is to have our America back like it was in the 1950's. We have all worked to hard for some hot headed politician to take our money. It is not Obama's fault we are in such deep debt. I think The Republicans and Bush were the ones who got us where we are today. All of the Federal Congress is responsible for this defecit and they should quit their creedy ways and fix it NOW!!!!!!!!!

  • I am by no means a George W. Bush fan, but it really irks me when someone wants to lay all the blame of our current state of economic downfall at his doorstep and defend the disaster that has been made since Obama took over. Let's look at a few facts, shall we:

George W. Bush assumed office on January 20th, 2001.

The 107th Congress assumed office on January 3rd, 2001. The 107th Congress had a Republican majority in the House and a Democrat majority in the Senate.

The 108th Congress assumed office on January 3rd, 2003. The 108th Congress had a Republican majority in both the House and Senate.

The 109th Congress assumed office on January 3rd, 2005. The 109th Congress had a Republican majority in both the House and Senate.

The 110th Congress assumed office on January 3rd, 2007. The 110th Congress had a Democrat majority in both the House and Senate.

So George W. Bush had 4 years with a Republican Congress, 2 years with a Democrat Congress, and 2 years with a split Congress.

Coincidentally it was when the Democrats controlled the entire [110th] Congress that the economy started to go south and has been been taking a free-fall nose-dive ever since.

According to historical data published by the Office of Management and Budget in the Obama White House, no Congress in which the Democrats controlled both the House and Senate has balanced the federal budget since fiscal 1969--more than 40 years ago.

The federal appropriations made for that fiscal year--which began on July 1, 1968 and ended on June 30, 1969--were approved by a Democrat-controlled Congress elected in 1966. They were signed by Democratic President Lyndon Johnson, who had decided not to run for reelection in 1968. (Until 1977, the federal fiscal year began on July 1 and ended on June 30. Since 1977, it has begun on Oct. 1 and ended on Sept. 30. Federal fiscal years are numbered by the calendar year in which they end.)

President Eisenhower in 1960 was the last Republican president to preside over a balanced budget. A Democrat-controlled Congress elected in 1958 approved the appropriations for that fiscal year in 1959.

More recently, the federal budget was balanced in fiscal years 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. A Republican-controlled Congress approved the appropriations for each one of those years and Democratic President Bill Clinton signed them. In fiscal years 1994 and 1995, when President Clinton governed with a Democrat-controlled Congress, the federal government ran deficits of $203.2 billion and $163.9 billion respectively. IMAGINE THAT...

Not sure all if the info is correct though because I know the max pell grant for 2011-2012 is 5500. But it is still a drop in the bucket considering the cost of college and they went up this year by another 10%.

  • That is what we are really kind-of on edge about. Obama will do whatever needs to be done to get what he wants. No matter what the majority of the US wants or needs. He has his own agenda - the "CHANGE" agenda. And even though I cannot stand him, he has fulfilled what he stated he would do - Change what we all know as the norm. Even though his changes are bad and hurtful to the US.

Remember, he still has until 2013 to destroy and turn the US into a socialist country. Which gives him more than enough time to do it.

As for blaming Bush for what is occurring is totally wrong. Sure, Obama walked into office with a recession starting. The economy is like a roller coaster ride. You have to reach the very bottom in order to go back to the top. However Obama, never allowed us to reach the bottom. He stopped it in the middle of the downward slope creating a false climb. Now we are starting to decline once again. This time it will be worse because we never recovered from the first downward slide. This was all Obama, not Bush. Also, Obama is the one on the spending spree.

"On Inauguration Day, the Debt stood at $10.626 trillion. The latest posting from the Treasury Department shows that as of July 31st, the debt hit $11.669 trillion.

During the last administration, it took over 2 ? years for the National Debt to increase a trillion dollars. But by the time former president George W. Bush left office, he had run up the deficit by a record amount: $4.9-trillion over eight years."

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-5209497-503544.html

So it took Bush a little over 2 years to spend as much as Obama has in one.

  • For the last three years I have tried to support Obama. When he touched the the third rail, in a scare tactic, I will bow out on this man forever.

Mr. Obama, my grandchild no longer gets a free lunch.

I see your pretty little girls in the news, and they look great. What is so sad, they know very of little of the child sleeping next to her mom, in the back seat of an old car, homeless.

  • Raise the debt ceiling? When you max out your credit card, only a **** fool believes that getting another one is the solution to the problem. The voters in this country were warned about this blatantly socialist and inexperienced buffoon. After all, his own Vice President stated during the campaign that Mr. Obama did not have the experience to lead. So...how's that "change" working out for ya now???

  • If the republicans were not holding the citizens of this country hostage and using us a tool to black male the President we would not be in this situation. They did it with extending the tax breaks to the wealthy ( keep in mind those were "tax breaks" or gimmes, offered as a temporal relief ,funded off the backs of hard working people who need their wages to survive. If they were intended to be permanent they would have been given as a tax reduction, not break,) Remember if the tax break/entitlement was not extended they would block the unemployment to millions? All we are to them is a means to an end that insures they get richer and we pay for it! They are once again using those who can afford it the least as bait to get what they want to pad the pockets of their greed mongers. They would rather see those on Social Security starve and lose anything than one of their elite lose a drop of fuel for their luxury yachts. Yes Obama has blame in this too - his blame is that he continues to allow this to happen! He needs to man up and tell them NO, that they can not use us as bait to ruin this country. I can't believe I'm saying this but Obama needs to learn from Bush, he needs to learn that he is President, and that he can not play fair all the time. He needs to take some of the tricks from Bush's play book and use them, playing nice - expecting the right to actually play fair and consider what is best for "the People" of this country is never going to happen so he needs to play their game their way. Fair, honest and bi-partisan is not working. The right has made it clear THEY WILL NEVER work with Obama not matter what - and for Obama to continue to act like they will is stupid on his part. HE needs to wake up, turn around and put his foot down and stop playing their game, by their rules and take the lead he was ELECTED to do!!!

  • Unique-Lies ---- just like with the tax breaks that we have been held hostage by the right they will o anything , hurt any one, to keep them..... The right has put America under the heal of their boots and is crushing the REAL American citizens more and more every minute. You may have a lot of fancy long bla bla entries with a lot of childish name calling and other propaganda fear mongering hate speech gab- but it does not change what is really going on, simply put it is the rabid right out to destroy the middle class and poor by slowly taking all possibility of them resurfacing to the quality of life where they can do any more than squeak by with the basics if they are lucky. They are intent on squeezing every penny left out of us to support their greed mongering buddies. They are patient though they will just force us to die off slowly, one crooked bill at a time , taking away our rights, making sure to preserve just enough of us to keep their cushie elite life styles . They are out to ruin anyone not up to their standards of greatness, race, religion or any one else they feel superior to less they are expendable - Hitler used gas chambers to do the same thing the right is attempting to do to the real citizens of this country. He wanted to get rid of those he did not concider as great as he was. They will Stop education, health care, assistance of any sort, lower wages to well below living standards, eliminate child worker laws ( we will need the young to work since parents won't have enough hours in a week to work and earn a livable wage so they will have to put the kids out there too) It will be the elite rich ( they won't stop at millionaires they will be the next tier of expendables once they stamp out us) and the extremely poor subservient who will be reduced to mere beggars who will be powerless to stand up for their rights and thus have to take any turds thrown at them by those elite. They will see to it that all work protections is gone, it will be the equivalent of what they refer to as the good old days - owners and slaves- haves and have nots. If we are not listed as approved of in the equivalent of a KKK roster we will be at their mercy. Hitler was too bold, they know to get their goal they have to be sleezy and slid it in behind the blind eyes of folks like you who have bought into the manipulations fed to them. - they learned from hitler how not to achieve their goal( gas chambers drew too much attention) , they will just force us to die off slowly one illness, one hungry uneducated child at a time.

So go call Obama names , and manipulate the facts ( or just repeat the talking points the republican tea bag puppet masters feed you -) it will not change a thing - it may get the votes needed to help them achieve their" kill off the little guy agenda", but it will not change the facts of their fear mongering elites intentions. I hope your smart enough to understand that they will throw you under the bus right along with all the rest of us, your just a puppet for a cause, and they will turn you into the waste pile right along with the rest of the real Americans that this country is made up of...... So do hang on tight to all your unique lies, if they make you feel like one of the big dogs. Your not any more important to them than any far left democrat, and every bit as expendable.

Wishful thinking. I hardly think you are in the same league, so rest easy. You have not made the top 10 yet.

If America could buy you for what you are worth and sell you for what you thought you were worth the national debt could be retired instantly.

  • Unique How do you figure it to be a TAX hike to return to the regular rate? If you go to break at work and are not paid for it, is it a pay raise when you return and get the normal wage you had before the break? Or should you keep the same rate you had on break so the employer does not have to give you a raise???? Get real, they had a temporary tax BREAK not a tax REDUCTION ---- the manipulation being fed the weak to confuse them into believing that end of a TEMPORARY BREAK to the real permanent rate is a tax hike is playing on stupidity!!!! They were given a gift of relief on the backs of the middle class and poor who had to sacrifice necessities to cover the expense of said breaks that preserved their fancy life style --- milk in exchange for jet fuel would be a good example. What part of TEMPORARY BREAK is so hard to understand???? I am amazed so many are being fooled and duped into believing that it is a tax hike, it will be the same as it was. People need to stop and THINK, conciser facts and forget about the fairy tales like the tax hike stuff they are being fed from the silver platters of those getting the nice BREAKS at their expense.

  • Taxes will destroy all the small businesses and unemployment will go to 50%, but Obama will say it is still under 10%. `

So the tax breaks will fix that? Your nuts!!! There is over 1 trillion in revenue losses the middle class is being expected to cover due to tax breaks---- you may not mind paying for their luxury life style, but me I can afford to do so. If their tax breaks were working we would not be where we are. And do not waste our time with the they are afraid of what will happen bla bla bla because they had years to create jobs before the economy tanked - now if you say Bush and his crap scared them it might fit in the time line. But the breaks themselves cause a lot of the problem. Common sense tells us when you go to war you do not hand out big fancy tax breaks --you pay for the war ( ummm guess the pay as you go should have expected to be followed by Bush too not just ignored till they cold blame it on the next guy )

  • What I think is ironic, is how many of you here were "afraid" of Obama because you thought he was a SOCIAList, and he was just going to funnel all the money to those who rely on government assistance....

Fast forward three years and he makes the slightest mention of being FORCED to withhold SOCIALSecruity beneftis (not his choice, the President doesn't pay the bills, Congress does), and all the anti-SOCIALism people can't fathom what will happen if their SOCIAList checks don't come to them. Is it me or did we just define the problem? Everybody wants a larger piece of the pie, but nobody wants to contribute anything more than they "feel" they should.

There are books about how the federal government works, and it would pay homage for you all to read it. If the federal government can't borrow money due to an imaginary debt ceiling then yes, EVERY program will experience cuts, even the SOCIAL programs people love to hate, but hate to lose.

  • The problem with social security is that the government has spent the money that is supposed to be there to fund it.

Social security is basically a ponzi scheme or pyramid scheme. The same type of gimmick Bernie Maddoff used to extort his investors.

The Social Security system has one mechanism working in its' favor that could make it sustainable and that is "death". The pyramid schemes all fail because there eventually is not enough money being paid in at the bottom of the pyramid (youth) to pay those at the top (retirees). However, since many people die before reaching retirement age that leaves the top with unclaimed money that can be used to pay those who live long enough to draw from it.

The Social Security system was set up seperate from the Federal budget with different funding withdrawn from tax payers and held in a trust fund managed by the fund trustees. Both parties are guilty of tapping into the trust fund and spending it.

To the best of my understanding this is how. The Social Security fund which was being paid into each year, also paid out the money to the receipents that same year and each year had an excess amount. The excess was place into a trust fund and grew to around 2.6 trillon dollars. About 1983, under Reagan, the law was passed to allow the government to issue "special bonds" to the social security trust fund in order to borrow money from the fund for other spending. The law would not take effect for 10yrs. (same as many other laws that are set to take affect at a time when those who pass the law are no longer in office). The law provided that the money borrowed did not have to be included as a budget "deficit" but was included on the total "debt". In 1993 (10 yrs later), under Clinton, the borrowing commenced. (Clinton projected a surplus in 10 yrs. long after he was to be out of office) This is why Clinton was able to project a surplus on the "deficit" but the total "debt" continued to grow. Bush did the same.

Obama has followed suit, now they threaten to not be able to pay without being able to borrow more money. So, this says that the trust fund has been completely emptied and that they need to borrow from Peter to pay Paul., or they (both parties) have/are a lying to us about the security of the funds and the status of current revenues/expenditures. Either way, the spending is the problem!! That is the problem with Socialist sooner or later they run out of other peoples money to spend.

Spending is the problem! The question to us is: How much of our childrens money are we willing to spend on ourselves?
