Love them or hate them, at least they are trying

Posted Thursday, August 30, 2007, at 6:53 PM

Reading some of the blogs lately makes me realize why many qualified folks do not run for political office. No matter how well you do, someone is going to question your integrity, your momma's integrity and accuse you of being in it for the money or to rule the world.

Every word will be analyzed and picked apart and much like numbers, you can twist and turn those words into just about anything you want. If you say the color of a basketball is orange and they don't like you, then saying that makes you a fear mongerer, racial profiler, prejudiced and probably a torturer babies at night for fun.

You can't win folks! You wonder why good honest people are hard to find in politics? The minute you throw your hat in the race, you are no longer honest, your family becomes dysfunctional and you are the most despicable person in the eyes of John Q. Public.

So why do they do it? While I do not know a politician that I agree with 100%, I believe most of them get into it because they believe they can help their fellow man or woman. Pretty naive huh? Many of today's politicians vying for President are not on my favorites list, but I still think they are trying to make a positive difference and I am sure that in some aspects they will.

Constructive criticism is good, but this stuff it is often vehement, nasty, and vicious comments that even turn on their fellow bloggers. I don't believe we can "all get along" but we could at least be civil. If nothing else, we should appreciate their willingness to take the crap that comes along with the office.

I just wished we would hear more of the good things, that good Senators and Representatives are doing...

But then again, that will never make news like the next scandalous headlines. Btw, we all know presedential elections, and some Senatorial and House of Rep's elections are coming up this time next year... So we should all get prepared for the nonsense!

I agree with darrick that you'll never hear about most representatives. They're too busy doing their jobs. The media loves a good scandal, the jucier the better.

Does anyone remember that pilot program that was put in place several years ago in some other state? It had to do with the voting polls and the ballots. If you did not want to vote for any of the candidates, you could choose "none of the above" and the parties would be forced to go back to their nominating committee and nominate other people for the office in which "none of the above" was a winner? Interesting concept.

Good points. To both of you.

And might I add, there are REPUBLICANS and DEMOCRATS alike who are dispicable and those that are true, honest, genuine leaders!

One thing that bothers me TO THE FULLEST???

Why do members of the House and Senate vote "My conscience" and "The way I see it"... When they are simply supposed to vote according to what those in their districts and states feel is right.

What ever happened to 'Representative Democracy'? It has been replaced with "I", "Me", and "My colleagues..."

Yes...

That is true, but just because you become a politician doesn't mean you become crooked. There good ones are those you never hear of, because bad news or negative news makes headlines. You hardly ever hear a headline that begins "Senator helps elderly victim escape burning house." That doesn't sell, as well as "Senator signals for sex in bathroom stall..."

The media puts up the big $$$ stories such as all that nasty accusatory and sometimes legitimate bad news...

Seriously, there are very fine and legit Congressmen, but they are doing their job properly and try their hardest to abide by the law, and practice what they preach.
