More on eBay

They found a new home on eBay!
August was a good month for us on eBay. This month our part time efforts really blossomed. We listed a travel trailer for a neighbor and got them a little above their asking price while putting over $600 in our pocket.

We sold our ordinary sales items, but hit it rich with one particular thing that cost us about 80 cents and sold for over $1,300 to a fellow in Italy. No, I am not going to say what it was, and this is not an every day occurrence but when you have millions of customers out there it can get fun, not to mention rewarding.

To some, eBay is a dirty word, but it has opened up the world to both buyer and seller. Merchants who deal in almost any marketplace would do well to embrace the new and enjoy the benefits.

Instead of spending hours upon hours browsing the stores and MAYBE finding that one special thing you have been looking for, you can put in a few search words and check out the world, all from the comfort of your home or office.

Apparently what we had (we did not know it, because we started it at $1.99) had not been seen on the general market for over 20 years. At least that is what a collector in Great Britain told us. He correctly estimated the final price and we thought he was crazy.

The search is just as enjoyable as finding the prize. Selling is also an exciting trip and if you have ever considered using the power of the internet to market your product or just sell your "stuff", there is no better time than now and eBay is about as easy as it gets.

Just to clarify, I am not employed by eBay. It is just a buying/selling community we stumbled on years ago and are so excited, we can't stop talking about it.

I went to a new media conference a couple of Saturdays ago in Nashville and got a real nice iPod accessory in the goodie bag. The trouble is, I have no iPod, and it won't work with a regular MP3 player. I've never used eBay before, either as a buyer or a seller, and so I have no user ratings. So my brother in California (who has 100 percent positive ratings) offered to sell it for me. We didn't get as much for it as we'd hoped -- I found out they gave out 300 of these accessories during the conference, and so mine may not have been the only one on the market. But whatever I got for it was free money!

I have several websites, and I have been avid seller on ebay for a few years, but I also have my own sites that I have built for e-commerce that do quite well also.

I use ebay to market my own sites and services while maybe losing a couple of dollars to ebay but I gain good customers that give me repeat sales.


You don't need any feedback to sell on ebay, you just need an accurate description. I have used my main ebay account and 2 of my other ones for specific sales related items, one is brand new with 0 - feedback and I am getting very good results. Just ship promptly, pack the item well and you will get good feedback with each sale.

That would have been an excellent item to test the selling waters for you JiC.

Electronics are really BIG on eBay, therefore many sellers. Unless you have a "must have item" you are probably not going to get your money back on items unless you get it free as you did or buy wholesale.

Another thing about electronics, it seems to bring out new buyers. When I sell in that category I get many more bids from "newbies" or low feedback scores. My non-payments have all come from that category as well. As long as you don't ship before payment it is not a big thing, just annoying.

In a recent eBay class we had a woman from North Nashville that had a lot of difficulty with costume jewelry. She was having trouble with the seller. When I researched it for her, I saw a trend of issues that crop up on both sides.

Everyone starts somewhere, so a low feedback count is not a death sentence, but you could help that by buying a few things. A "0" score can limit your ability to sell in a "buy-it now" format and a few other things, but that is not a great concern. Now a low feedback percentage will definitely affect you.

EM, your strategy of using eBay as a marketing tool is often overlooked and it is a great one. As you know, you can't promote your websites directly with a link in the sales listing, but you can allude to it, and in your "about me" page you can outright talk about it. Choosing an eBay name similar to your website or a website similar to your eBay name can enhance that exposure as well.

EM, your interest in this arena as well as the forum about finding something for youth to do means we will meet some day soon, if we haven't already.

Very few people know of me. I tend to get things done in the background. I tend to push too hard so people get a little taken back by my abrasive attitude. I am not from Shelbyville, I am originally from the Metro DC area. Moved here 10 years ago, and I really like the people alot.
