Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!Posted Wednesday, October 31, 2007, at 12:36 PM
First of all, if you ever go to Cedar Crest Hospital in Smyrna, (just off I-24) expect to get top notch service and medical care. I have been in hospitals a few times, so I have something to compare.
These folks were not only methodical and professional, they were nice! They truly went out of their way to see that I was as comfortable as possible. I had an omelet on the morning I got out that would compete with many breakfast restaurants.
Now to why I was there, as my orthopedic surgeon put it, life had caught up to me and I needed to have four vertebrae fused in my neck. That crushing flip while body surfing in the ocean, a few crunches in High School football, a water skiing tumble that left my whole body black and blue, etc, etc.
I look forward to the finished result, but let me tell you, the after surgery recovery is a bit more than they paint in the tour-guide brochure! I would still do it, but ouch!
They took bone out of my hip to fuse between the vertebrae and until I tried to get out of bed, it seemed to be great. At least until they took the pain blocker out.
According to the printed matter, I would only have to wear the neck brace two weeks. Nope, how about 6 weeks, and they left out the "bone growth stimulator" I will wear four hours every day.
I would STILL do it to take away the pain that has been creeping up on me for years. The doctor was surprised I was walking. But I would not have planned the Halloween party and eBay classes and regular work schedule, had I known what reality was. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!
