Chat with Annie RuthPosted Sunday, December 23, 2007, at 7:55 AM
An everyday smile from Annie Ruth
I originally arranged the visit with her son Dave Douglas who is now "retired and living in central Texas", but obviously keeps close tabs on his native Bedford County. He saw my blog about a hidden wealth of knowledge in our senior citizens and suggested that Annie Ruth and I talk.
Her letter about gardening and such should be published in today's (Sunday) newspaper, so make sure your get a copy, but it turns out that she is a wealth of knowledge on many things in Bell Buckle, so we had LOTS to talk about.
Both seeing her and talking to her, you would never guess that she is about to start her 90th year on this earth! I can only hope I am doing that well, so it made me curious about how she lives her life. Reading her favorite book and not dwelling on the negatives seemed to be a big part.
What book? She smiled and said that she did not want to be pushy, but she reads the Bible. We had lots of things to talk about, so we did not get a chance to discuss what chapters and verses were her favorites, but I have to get back and find out, because she has obviously gleaned the best of the best.
Gardening was my main topic for the visit, but she had so many interesting things to say about my area of Bedford County that we rarely touched the garden. Besides she said, "I said all I know to say about gardening in my letter to you". In fact, she knows a lot more. We just need to spend more time chatting.
When she entered assisted living, she briefly had thoughts that all of us would probably have, but she quickly dismissed the negative and focused on the positive. She now seems to fully embrace her newest stage of life and is a positive influence on others staying there.
More to come.
