Garden Gleanings 2Posted Sunday, January 20, 2008, at 11:49 AM
Did I mention he likes to climb?
Deb said we need to get a warmer for our bird's drinking water, they were standing on the ice looking in at her. Of course, they have running water in our goldfish/water feature, but our youngest cat likes to guard that. Can't let such a great bird magnet go to waste.
He is staying inside more today. Guess he is not as silly as he acts. The ice is not strong enough for him to walk on yet. Maybe by tomorrow, he will get to chase the goldfish underneath.
It would be a great day to turn the soil and zap the overwintering insects, but I am not sure I could get the tiller going, or myself for that matter. But I do have my seed order filled.
I should be planting: edible soybean (edamame) carrots, bitter melon (several varieties), leaf lettuce, yellow squash, zuchini, better boy tomato, eggplant, corn, swiss chard, okra, chinese cabbage, mao gwa, anaheim chile, onion, winter melon, and sugar snap peas.
New this year will be artichoke, Crosby Egyptian and Chioggia beets, Masai green bean, Pink Lipstick swiss chard, Diva cucumber, Red fire lettuce, Cajun Delight Okra, Watermelon radish, Dash spinach, Red Eye winter squash and Optico chinese cabbage.
Of course there are flowers to plant as well. I like to mix them in with the vegetables to encourage beneficial insects. By the way. spiders are highly beneficial in the garden.
I know, I know. I got carried away, but that is part of the fun of shopping, right? But it only cost me $26.85 including shipping, but think of how much exercise it will give me, the good food it will hopefully produce and how it will keep me out of trouble? I won't plant all the seeds, so in most cases I will have left over for next year.
