Garden Gleanings - The first planting of the seasonPosted Saturday, February 2, 2008, at 9:27 AM
The first four varieties of the year have hit the soil! (potting soil) And the winners are:
Pak Choy - Canton Short Chinese Cabbage They are able to have young leaves harvest at 35 days and come to maturity in 60. I will transplant in about three weeks.
Optiko Hybrid Chinese Cabbage. Same info as above except 75 days to maturity. Supposedly withstands heat well so I will do some planting outside as well.
Choko Baby Pakchoi. These are good for stir-frying whole. They only grow 3" high. Same transplanting info and can be harvested early. Not good in hot weather so I may replant in fall.
And here is the newest and experimental one for me, Green Globe Artichoke. Generally they are a biennial in California, but they say we can grow them as an annual here and get a decent crop. We'll see.
Deb's mother Wanda just put a bowl of cantaloupe and watermelon on the table in front of me, so I gotta go. Besides, I have to get some progress on the bathroom and if the day warms up like promised, maybe even work some peat moss and compost into the first bed outside!
