Garden Gleanings - First Daffodil or Crocus?

Posted Thursday, February 21, 2008, at 11:56 AM

Our Daffy's are budding but not out yet. Surely someone has some up close to the house or a sheltered area? Who has the first to bloom?

I thought our first buds would come from those close to our house and patio. Surprise! They are off by a swing set on a Eastward facing slope. Our Southern facing ones are still thinking about it.

There are lots out on 130West. They'll get a nice freeze tonight though.

Saw a bunch of them on Hwy 82 outside of Bell Buckle today. It feels warmer already.

I noticed buttercups in front of a neighbor's house, but ours haven't bloomed yet.

That makes sense. Enjoy, they don't last too long. There is such a wide variety of them too.

Oh I found it is a pink Hyacinth

Hmmmm they don't look like any of those. And I am sure I didn't actually plant them, well at least I think I am sure. They kind of look like snap dragons without the snap..lol that meaning that there are several blooms on one tall stem but the leaves looks a lot like buttercups.

I had something coming up which I thought was buttercups but now that they are blooming I am not sure what they are, the leaves look like buttercups but they are pink blooms. They may be crocus but I am not quite sure what a crocus even is.. :>(

If the ones in back bloom intermittently, I would probably move them. I planted some of our overflow down by our driveway entrance last year. Lot of shade. They are coming up, but only time will tell if they get enough sun.

I'm in the city.

One patch gets full sun in my front yard (they are the ones blooming). The ones in the shade are up, but no buds or blooming....yet. Those are always slow to bloom or never bloom. Any tips? Should I move them to a more sunny area.

I think the sunlight must be warming the ground temp there. It is the afternoon sun they are getting, btw.

We saw some way up on Chestnut Ridge, just one little spot of them, in full bloom two weekends ago. At the time, they were the only ones we'd seen blooming. I have since seen some in bloom but not awhole lot.

Is anyone watching those gardening shows on QVC today. Its mostly flowers and gadgets, but I like to watch. Come on spring! (But not until winter is completely over).

Are you in the city or out in the country?

Are all of them or just in a select area?

Why do you think they are so early?

See, there is a responsibility that comes with being the winner.

We have a flower bud, I keep meaning to take a picture of it but haven't had a chance to yet. I don't know what kind it is, it's yellow - probably a daffodil. I'm pretty excited for all the flowers to bloom.
