Garden Gleanings - We are on for Friday night!!Posted Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at 12:31 PM
Just got the OK from Nancy at the Hong Kong restaurant 510 Madison Street in Shelbyville, that we can meet in their side room to eat and discuss the new gardening group at 6:30 this Friday. March 14th
This is open to EVERYONE who is interested in growing something (legal). It can be indoor gardens, outdoor gardens, vegetables, flowers, shrubs, trees, ornamentals, edible landscapers, youth gardening, enabling (disabled) gardens, community gardens, YOU NAME IT! No age limit high, or low, so bring the whole family! If there is enough interest in one area, we could break into groups but for now, lets get together and find out about our interests and needs. Steve Mills and his wife have one daughter and live on a farm outside of Bell Buckle. They previously owned two coffee/ice cream shops, currently operate an internet sales company and teach classes, but his primary job involves the paper industry worldwide. Hobbies and interests lie in gardening, photography, recorded music and of course, their pets.

Casey your husband? I'm ready to corner him later on tonight and ask a million questions. After I am done, then Jeremy will ask a bunch more, tell Casey to be ready.

Casey is known to friends and family as the "fishguy". So, he may have some advice for you. Also, he's on a first name basis with everyone at Aquatic Critter in Nashville. They are an invaluable source of knowledge and will answer questions by phone too.
koi pond... wow you can fish right outside the window.
Great! There is another topic of conversation.
We have a koi pond, it came with the house and we know nothing about it (and in fact are surprised we haven't yet killed the fish) - although after last summer's surprise lotus bloom, I think we're planning on trying to put some new, nicer plants in.
I don't know of a one that bites, so we should be good.
At this time we do not have any structure and maybe don't need any. A lot depends on what the group wants to do. Just talking and sharing should not require anything.
If we want to go further with community or enabling gardens, compost projects etc., we may need a little more but folks will rise to the occasion.
I am looking at our potted plants to see what would be good for a door prize. My wife rolls her eyes every time I save cuttings or re-pot new plants. It would do us good to share some.
Later in the year, I would like to swap some iris to expand our color. Right now it is purple and lighter purple. We have a few Japanese white ones, but they have not multiplied enough to share yet.
Then there are the daffodils. We do not have a wide selection, but we have of solid and bi-color yellows. My brother probably has hundreds of varieties and actually takes a week off in the spring to harvest them and carry them around to different hospitals etc. in his town.
The excitement is building. By the way, anyone into water gardening and ponds?

I'm also alittle nervous about meeting everyone!
I'll be there Friday (barring anything unexpected). I look forward to meeting some of you folks.
