Garden Gleanings - Pond-ectomy What??

I had it all planned this morning. We picked up a load of wood from a friend of ours and I was going to empty the trailer and cut the wood into firewood pieces.
Yup, that was what I was going to do, but when I got down to the kitchen, my mother-in-law mentioned that the pond had no water in it. Now I thought she meant it had not filled up from the rain, but no, it had very little water in it!
Yikes! Occasionally the watercress blocks the water flow and diverts it over the edges and this time it REALLY emptied it. I got a garbage can and filled it with water to put the fish in and started to clean the watercress out. The I decided that since the pond was almost empty, I might as well clean out the build-up in there too.
I never did get all the fish out and when I accidentally grabbed Snappy I barely missed a finger bite. I did not want to put him in with the fish so I got another bucket but in the meantime he had disappeared again into the muddy water.
It was then that I noticed someone crawling over my bare feet. I could not grab him with my hands because I could not see him in the muddy water and I could not seem catch him with the net, so Snappy stayed on my feet until I was done cleaning. Now that is a bonding experience, but one I can wait a long time to do again. I was afraid if I wiggled my toes, he would sample one.
Oh, in case you have missed my blogs before, Snappy is a snapping turtle who adopted our fish pond a year or two ago as a baby. He comes up to the surface and we feed him every day with the fish. So far he has not tried to eat one of them, but eventually we will have to move him. He is fussy too! Won't eat turtle food, just a red, fish shaped treat from the goldfish.
Anyway, got the pond cleaned out, cleared the water pump for the third time and refilled the pond. Now, back to the firewood. |
