Bedford Ramblings - One of our own needs help

Posted Thursday, May 29, 2008, at 7:39 AM

By one of our own, I mean one of our local bloggers got hit hard by the electrical energy in that last round of storms. It knocked out their VCR which they depend on for entertainment since their TV reception is limited to one station.

It also got their computer that they use to converse with their children and family AND the T-G blog. Now you know it is serious!

It sounds as if they are on a limited income and their limit has been reached some time ago, so they can not replace these items. If you have an old computer that has internet access, why pay to have it recycled? You can give it to this family and get a warm fuzzy which has high value.

Write back here and we will get the two of you together.

I have to look for it, but their is a swap site out there that is a venue for these things. If someone knows it they could save me some time and remind others. Anyone know?

I have a vcr that we're not using if they want it.

-- Posted by cfrich on Thu, May 29, 2008, at 9:27 AM

Is the computer the only thing they need?

-- Posted by jaxspike on Thu, May 29, 2008, at 9:29 AM

Jaxspike, it sounds as if they could use a good deal of help, so I will ask. Chantal, hang on to it and I will get them in the mix.

daysfan207, that,s the site I was thinking of. I thought I bookmarked it but must have filed it in some strange manner. Thanks.

Try to list the things they need here, so we can see if we have it, or a donation. And let us know where to send it to.

No problem . . . I actually have two vcrs that I dont use anymore and one of them has hardly been used. I didnt think anyone used them anymore since dvds are the main thing now.

I am awaiting their response.

Steve, see if you can find out what sort of PC they have. I've got loads of extra parts since I got my stuff out of storage in FL. Most likely I can replace whatever was fried on their machine. It's possible that it was only the power supply or PS and motherboard that were fried. Regardless, whatever they need, I can probably fix it. You've got my e-mail address. Give me a shout and I'll see what I can do. I've never seen a PC that was fried that couldn't be salvaged.

I too have a messload of parts. I have a VCR too, a nice mitsubishi. Was top of the line.

Thanks folks. They are borrowing someone's laptop to converse, so I may not hear from them until tomorrow.

Hello to all you nice folks that are out there....My husband is the Head of Maintenance at Cascade High and a another Maintenance man for Bedford County Board of Education took our Hard-drive home and said that he has a motherboard at his home and he is going to replace it with one he has. He thinks that is the problem..We sure hope so...Like I have talked many times we have a total of 8 children..My husband has a daughter from a earlier marriage. To me she is my daughter to. Our other daughter will be 33 in Aug. She has Down's Sydrome and is the angel in our life..She lives in North Carolina were all her other 5 brothers lives..Her baby brother will be a Sr. this coming school year at Cascade..We have the cam on our computer and so I can talk and see our angel every day..She is in a wonderful housing in North Carolina for girls only with Downs Sydrome..She works everyday and is a wiz on the computer...I have already put a prayer into God to see that we can have the extra money to bring her here next year to see her brother graduate...We wanted to bring her here for the summer (this year) with us but things seem to be going a little backwards for us...She misses when she can not see me...I have talked to her and explained why we have not chatted all week...She always says "Oh Mom" I was so up-set when we came home on Monday from cooking out at the Park..But this is really just a small matter to what we have been thru all our marriage..Thru it all God has gotten us thru it..We do not look at our daughter who has Down's as a problem...She is a gift to us..But I look back to having 3 mini strokes..Breast Cancer in both Breast twice....A bleeding stomach so bad that they did not know if they were going to have to remove 3/4 of my stomach....Our home burned down in 2004 and we lost everything...We lost 1 of grandsons at the age of 5 only 3 years ago..So I know that God is already here helping us thru this..BECAUSE he has brought all of you into our life...I did ask him to please make the weather good for me from 10pm to 11pm so I can get channel 30 in to watch Andy Grifftn...He did a good job tonite it was only 55% fuzzy..It also messed up our 2 C.D. players...I called them a VCR..But they played the C.D. movies...I know I am not up to date with what things are called...I always said put a movie in the VCR..I saved all the cans I picked up thru the foot-ball season at Cascade High this past fall ( my husband and I always clean up behind all games for the past 8 years)and bought my husband a new C.D. player and recorder for Christams..Now it is gone ...But you know it could have been alot worse...If anyone has a player that plays the CD movies and wants to sale it I would love to know...Thank You Steve and everyone else out there...

Rebelrose,

How many children are living with you? Do you surge protectors on your electronic equipment?

-- Posted by Evil Monkey on Fri, May 30, 2008, at 8:26 AM

rebelrose, I have a dvd player that we no longer use if you want it - it works but I'm not sure if I have all the cables that go with it.

-- Posted by cfrich on Fri, May 30, 2008, at 10:07 AM

Hi Evil Monkey....Our children are all married except for 1 daughter and our son who will be a Sr. this year at Cascade....Our Children are 39(step-daughter) and a son 38 on the 4th of July and a son 36 and our daughter 33(in Aug.)twin son's at 26 and another son 25 and then our baby son 17...Yes we had it all plugged into a surge protector..Our t.v. and the C.D player was plugged into the same one and it did not bother our T.V. but it took out the C.D. player and our son's Game Cube. Then took his C.D player out in his room and his T.V. is okay and then the computer...They say that bad luck runs in 3's...So since it hit in 3 different area's I hope that it means that we are not going to have bad luck for a little while.(lol).

-- Posted by rebelrose on Fri, May 30, 2008, at 10:18 AM

Chantal, I've got plenty of cables to plug the DVD player up if she needs them. Actually, my wife would probably welcome the opportunity to get rid of some of my cables.

Would it be best to contact your husband at work? Please do not give out contact information in this blog. It can be viewed by the world and we do not want other types of problems to arise.

You have my e-mail for another blog so I will be happy to be the middleman if necessary.

-- Posted by stevemills on Fri, May 30, 2008, at 11:40 AM

How old was the surge protector? Because I believe if you still have the receipt and warranty, you are supposed to be protected up to a certain amount. I know it is a longshot that you might still have the receipt, but you never know. Let me know if you need anything. Call me at 536-1279.

-- Posted by Evil Monkey on Sat, May 31, 2008, at 3:13 PM

LOL Thom, it seems you and i have alot in common.

-- Posted by Evil Monkey on Sat, May 31, 2008, at 3:22 PM

EM - It does seem that way, doesn't it? Unfortunately most surge suppressors that people buy really don't have the guarantee. I doubt it would unless they paid considerably more than the average run of the mill surge suppressor.

Personally, I much prefer a good UPS. It's going to sacrifice itself before it takes out my equipment. My wife thought I was nuts at first for putting the TV and all on it. After moving up here, that thing has saved us numerous times.

Hi Everyone...We have our computer up and running again...A friend fixed it..It was not the motherboard but the connector that the motherboard was plugged into...I think I have that right...Efrich...if you have a dvd player and do not use it..We would love to pay you a little something for it....That would be wonderful....it feels so good to sit down and reach out and touch my family again...Before we went to bed last night we un-plugged everything when we saw that a thunderstorm might come to our area over night or early morning...And it was pretty bad too here in our area...Is it just me or are we having worse storms this year?? Thank You all for reaching out and offering help...You just do not know how wonderful that feels....

-- Posted by rebelrose on Sun, Jun 1, 2008, at 10:27 AM

Good to hear you are up and running on a few things. How about your son's Playstation 3. Is it going again?

-- Posted by stevemills on Sun, Jun 1, 2008, at 12:44 PM

rebelrose - we definately don't use it and it's just gathering dust. I would rather someone give it a good home, then just have it sitting unused. just email me and we can set up a time to meet. hartleby(at)gmail.com. (just replace the 'at' with @).

-- Posted by cfrich on Sun, Jun 1, 2008, at 5:08 PM

rebelrose - If you need cables to connect them you can contact me at thoms_blog(at)yahoo.com (same thing, replace the (at) with @). We just live in BB and I can meet you over in WT one evening if you need them.

-- Posted by Thom on Sun, Jun 1, 2008, at 10:24 PM
