Garden Gleanings - Meeting of Weed'em and Reap at Hong Hong this FridayPosted Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at 4:02 PM
I hope they allow me back in the door at Hong Kong. A few weeks ago I brought them what I thought was a Chinese Winter Melon, good for soups and stir fry. I brought them another two weeks ago and they met me at the door waving me off, or at least the melon. No, no, no, no,....
It seems the first one was so hard, they could not use a knife to cut into it and had to throw it out. Now that had me confused, but as I was going through my seeds to plant for the fall I think I hit on the solution.
I forgot that I planted a new plant this year, a "Bushel Gourd" (Cucurbita pepo)and it has a very similar growing habit to the Winter Melon. It has white flowers and can grow up to 165 pounds! Once the vines started growing, I lost track of which one was which and had forgotten anyway.
You guessed it, I brought them the gourd. I cut another when I got home and found I could actually bounce it on the concrete without breaking. No wonder their knife did not work!
They look so similar that I am now going to wait until the winter melon turns white or the gourd dries up. I can't take any more chances with my reputation!
