  • I can hardly type for laughing. There's no fool like a self-inflicted fool. You should save some seeds from both varieties, who knows you may have developed a Winter Gourd.

I'll share one with you. My Grandfather was an avid gardener. My cousin (in her mid 30's mind you) went to "pick" sweet potatoes. He told her where they were and went on about his business. About a half hour later she found him and said, "Grandaddy, I looked at every one of those plants, there isn't a single sweet potato out there."

He said, "I dug some yesterday, there are plenty."

    She said, "Dug?"

  • I got another one... for more than 30 years my father was determined that peanuts grew on trees, like walnuts.

  • As the children are removed from the actual growing of things, it is not surprising that they don't know how things grow. They come from the grocery store. You would think the potato on the end of sweet would have given a hint, but maybe those are a mystery as well.

Nuts belong on trees. I am with your father craftin-mom. Just 'cause someone planted 'em upside down, it still should be on trees.

Maybe the fault is in the person who named it. If they had called it a 'dirt nut', or 'contra nut' we might be able to accept it.

  • Speaking of nuts that won't be found where they're expected to be,I'm going to have to miss tonight's meeting.

Y'all have a great time, take an extra trip to the buffet for me and take notes about all you learn.

    I'll see you later.

Have a great weekend and a happy holiday.

    (What holiday,you ask?)

  • Arrrrhhh to you Matey. I have two give-away books tonight. One appropriately on Chinese vegetable growing. (Should have had that with me when I picked that winter melon)

  • I'm standing in the yard in my leather helmet, jacket, goggles, jodphurs and silk scarf waiting for the plane!

Hope you have a wonderful meeting.

  • No, just waiting for my ride to the meeting.

  • Darn, I forgot to swing by. The air turbulence over.... Hey wait a minute, you never told me where you were, so I'm off the hook.

We had a disappointing turn-out last night. Just a few of us die-hards. We decided not to do the drawing but Barbara borrowed one of them with the PROMISE she will return it to give away in two weeks.

We also swapped some seed and plants. The indoor season is coming up, so I may bring some more houseplants next time.

Because of the economy, we discussed the old victory garden concept and mused about doing a couple of presentations for those considering gardens to supplement their budget next year. Some did it this year, but the next one is shaping up to be a bumpy one.

    Any feedback on that?????

We also discussed moving the meetings to another location. No problems with this one, we just thought a change of pace might bring in some new faces.

We had someone early in the year suggest a canning presentation, but we have not seen them in a LONG time (Mary) so .....

    What suggestions do we have?

  • Boy, I can hear a pin drop! NO SUGGESTIONS or comments?
