Meeting Tuesday Night (Jan 13) for zoning change that would affect all Bedford CountyPosted Monday, January 12, 2009, at 12:35 PM
I may have missed a blog discussion previously but since another meeting is coming up, this might be a good time to discuss it some more. The change appears to be county inclusive, so if you think you know what this is about and that it is not in your area, you might want to re-think that.
From what I have seen and heard, the change would move control of mining, rock quarries, strip mining and similar activities to a different zone category that is MUCH less controlled. Much less control translates to making it easier to get such an operation going. Individual approval might not even be necessary.
The way to know what this means would be to go to the meeting tomorrow on the second floor of the Court House in Shelbyville at 7:00 PM. This way you would know without any "filters" for or against.
The way things are worded it is often tough to know exactly what a yes or no vote means.
From what I understand, if you DO NOT want a rock quarry from being your neighbor, you would encourage your County Commissioner to vote AGAINST any change to the current zoning status.
If you do not mind that a rock quarry sets up in your back yard then encourage a vote for the change. By the way, rock quarries usually use explosives to break the rock and then grinders and heavy equipment to make the rock smaller and move it around.
Get involved to learn directly.
