Gardening excitement is building. TONIGHT is Weed'em and Reap.

Posted Friday, January 23, 2009, at 4:29 PM

Remember, we normally meet on Friday, but starting today (Saturday January 24th,) we will be meeting at the Hong Kong Restaurant on Madison Street in Shelbyville.

This past two weeks have flown by. I am not really sure why, but it seems like just a few days ago that we met. Remember to bring your seed catalogs.

The cuttings I made of Angel leaf begonia are not rooted yet, so I will not be bring them, but if someone is interested in trying to root some of their own, I will bring some leaves. I will also bring some maple leaf begonia leaves for those who want to try that. The leaves are red.

They are already nominating gardeners to manage the White House garden http://www.madison.com/tct/news/stories/... and there is even a garden or approval for a garden. ??

Kinda off subject, but has anyone noticed buttercups coming up?

As long as it is gardening, it isn't off topic.

Yes, I have found some buttercups breaking ground. I covered them with leaves and tried to convince them not to rush, but maybe Mother Nature knows more. Anyone for an early Spring?

Just as long as it is not a sign of a dry hot summer.

Your comment about buttercups reminded me this morning that I need to clear some wood I have on top of one of our main garden beds.

It is long and narrow enough for me to stack wood across the span between the rock sides, so I do not sit directly on the ground but it tends to shelter the plants and they start to come up earlier than they should.

We store the wood here because it is the closest to our heater, but your comment will change that. And I just put some more there two days ago! Darn!

I know there are slight differences between plants but many people use buttercup and daffodil interchangeably. I wonder how many other names there are for this early spring bulb?

Don't have them peeking up at my house, but at my dad's, in places, they were up about an inch. I just hate to see them come up and things bud out and then get frozen back, again.
