Garden club, plant swap, and all around good time.Posted Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at 7:57 AM
Thanks to all who brought plants and pots to our last meeting. I have already filled mine with three different Chinese squash. I got a few extra from the plants Mike gave out, but I have to start more seeds, so I am sure they won't be extra for long. I can't wait to see how that "Hillbilly" tomato turns out.
Here is a description I found on a seed site: "The origin of this old American heirloom tomato variety traces back to the hills of West Virginia in the 1880's and features orange-yellow tomato fruit streaked with red. When cut, Hillbilly tomatoes reveal a starburst pattern in it's meaty flesh. Each Hillbilly Tomato reaches to a weight of upward of 1 1/2 pounds and is very sweet to the taste. Indeterminate. 85 days." http://www.tomatoseeds.net/tomato-seeds/...
We are still looking for a wildflower that Sandy gave to us two meetings ago. She found a low-growing plant with a yellow flower that lasts only a day or two and finishes with a seed pod. The leaves and growing habit look like a dandelion. A dandelion and false-dandelion have been ruled out and we thought a California poppy, but her picture does not look like a poppy, so...... The conversations bounced across the spectrum of subjects, not always gardening but we are now a group of neighbors and sidetracking is not a violation of any rules, since we don't have any. Henry Martyn Robert would have a fit if he attended our meeting (Robert's Rules of Order) Judy gave us a report from the Middle Tennessee Plant Swap at Henry Horton State Park. We have a link to their site on our web page http://www.mybedfordcounty.com/Weedemand... We eventually broke up with a plant swap of our own. Mike had his pick-up, Kaye brought some tomatoes and I brought a few more plants as well. All combined, I would guess we had 12-15 different varieties and multiples of them. If someone wanted a plant, they all had the opportunity to leave with some. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

By the way, have I mentioned that Richard has a detailed description of his garden on our web page as well? I can not remember if I posted this and too short on time to browse through the entries.
Check it out! http://www.mybedfordcounty.com/Weedemand...
I am so sad that I missed what sounded like a great meeting! But I have it on my calendar for the next meeting and nothings going to stop me this time!
Thank you for holding on to that peppermint, I told my dad he should of gone but he totally forgot.
That garden swap sounds awesome, but why is it I hear about everything once its over! lol 2 days late and a dollar short is the story of my life! Or maybe now I am just a year a head! I plan on attending next year!
See you all in a couple of weeks!
I forgot it too Tamera. I should have talked it up here, but was distracted.
Don't worry Tamara. I'll probably bring a few more plants of the same variety to the next meeting. I have to make sure Barbara gets her Datura!
By the way, those Basil seeds you gave me...all of them germinated! I have become an overnight commercial basil grower!
Datura!
That's the name I could not remember. Thanks for putting it in writing.
I really got to attend one of these meetings. Any room for an old old hippy? By the way Steve, my Caruso, and German queen plants are over 6 feet tall now and getting heavy with fruit. God will, its gonna be a good year.
I wish you would attend the next meeting. I need directions and advice from you to build the straw bale planter. I want to build one for my mom and I'll be visiting her on the 16th.
The next meeting should be on the 13th, so the timing would be great.
We could pick your brain on a few other planting methods too!
Sounds like a plan to me!!
Hi Steve, I'm trying to find a sitter so I can come to the next meeting. I sure do miss the fun we have and all of the members. Dale is bed ridden now. Poor guy, sad to see someone get to this stage.
You should see my garden. It is the best I've ever had. Must have been the extra rain. So far no bugs. If your in town give me a call and drop by to see what you can do in a subdivison yard.
Jere, We have you missed you and Barbara both.
Hopefully we'll see you soon!
Jere, it is GREAT to hear from you!
Barbara has not been feeling well. I need to check in on her tomorrow.
After a day playing in the garden, I would love to talk about someone else's. I missed that meeting we had at you house last year but I would like to get by.
I think Barbara is in the hospital?
(I pray that she,Dale and all our under the weather people get to feeling better.)
Jere,I could sit with Dale while you Red Hat and Weed 'Em and Reap.
I've indulged in visiting with my clubs and hangouts a lot since we got back on our feet at my house.
I could skip a Saturday if it meant you could have some time to relax,be with friends and recharge your batteries.
