Now for the "what the heck is it". This is the ripe vegetable (or fruit depending on who you are talking to)that has burst open by itself. The seeds have a bright red jell on the outside similar to a pomegranate but does not taste like one. This eventually dries up and falls off leaving a brownish, irregular shaped seed.
For those who come to the meetings, you have seen the white version and Barbara has taken some to try or maybe share with Jere. Additionally, I will give a hint to those who have never seen them. The hint? Come to a meeting.
Just kidding. The real hint is that it is used in oriental cooking, but not any that you will find in restaurants. It grows on vines and is most often seen in a green version. Our Chinese friends love to get them but I am not sure if it is for their taste or medicinal value.
I have eaten them raw and cooked. Not sure which way is better (or worse). I believe they are stir fried with meats and rice, or at least that is the way I have seen it most often.
The first one to tag it correctly will get their choice of the aloe plant pictured or a book. The extra "gotcha" is that you need to come to the meeting to get it.
I will have to go to the bookshelf to choose a book, so I do not know what it is yet. The aloe is about 15-20 inches across and comes in it's own cheap plastic pot!
Whichever is not chosen for this award will be given away by drawing. At the meeting, of course.
