Cats and dog update.Posted Monday, January 11, 2010, at 6:24 PM
Pita, Big Boy, Sable and BW.
I can not remember if I have mentioned that they have interesting rituals. At least three of them will head off into the woods a little bit to go potty before coming to eat. This morning Sable was not happy until she had tried three different spots.
Someone else is bring them food, which I am sure they welcome. I know this because they bring a different brand of dry food and one day I found all the dished stacked up within each other. Unless these cats have really progressed with their tidiness, this was not their doing. This morning I thought of leaving a note to introduce myself to the other benefactors. I might do that tomorrow.
Now to our stray dog Pita. I was afraid I was going to have to tell you we had her put to sleep this morning, but that will not be the case. Thursday she started trying to find grass to eat and throw up. She mostly found my plants in the greenhouse, but that was not unusual. I found one ivy plant totally split apart with roots bare (very bare)
Something she ate either got stuck or caused her to get sick. She kept tensing as if she was trying to throw up, but nothing was being produced. She stopped eating and by Saturday was starting to get weak. As to be expected, it was on the weekend so only emergency vet care was available. I swore I would not spend our money with a operation so her future did not look good.
I decided to check the internet and found some advice to try feeding her chicken broth by using a turkey basting syringe. They said that sometimes this would give the dog enough desire to start eating again. I did this Saturday afternoon and evening but she was not too pleased with my doctoring.
Sunday morning I mashed some canned cat food into the chicken broth to make a loose paste. Yum, yum. She seemed to pay a little attention to it and licked the dish. By this time we were looking for any signs of improvement and we took this as promising. Sunday afternoon she actually licked up more and by Sunday evening she was eating a spoonful.
It was still not enough to sustain her so we went to bed expecting to visit the vet early this morning. This morning, 'Katie bar the door', she was hungry! (Anyone know where that saying come from?) I gave her about a cup of canned food and she gobbled it down. The trip was postponed. By mid morning she was eating dry food again and ready to go.
I informed Debbi of the good news and bad news. The good was Pita was back to normal. The bad news was Pita was back to normal, starting to chew on things that were not hers and chasing her buddy, Sammy the cat.
