Remember something called "Free Trade"? Well it ain't so free going the other way.Posted Thursday, April 1, 2010, at 2:26 PM
We thought it was challenging when we opened a Canadian company and new twists always appear when we cross the border either way, but try to get across the Mexican border! I have been spending the most of my last few days trying to get our customized" commercial vehicle approved to cross the border with our machinery.
First we heard that it had to be at least 10 years old and gas not diesel. After a few days of going around and around, it was determined that it was not going to happen. We had already spent $25k on the truck and having it customized to carry our equipment, but we said OK, we will buy another truck that is 13 years old.
But wait, there is another obstacle. No commercial trucks are permitted to cross. Of course, they do all the time but ours was going to stay, so it had to be a Mexican truck. There is no truck like this one (remember, we had it altered), but that does not matter. We were not going to sell it over there, just use it. Nope, it is not going to be.
Now the economy of Mexico is not good, as evidenced by all our visitors here, but Mexico would rather enforce their truck policy than to give 3-5 of their own people an opportunity to create a business there. They will use their sweat equity to own part of it, but nope, the government wants to make a truck sale.
These folks literally cried when they thought they could stay in Mexico and make a good living. Now they are crying because the deal is close to falling apart. I guess politicians make the same amount of sense there as they do here.
