Thanksgiving night musingsPosted Thursday, November 25, 2010, at 8:51 PM
Last night was my turkey and fixin's dinner with our daughter & friend from Murfreesboro. She & I usually have a non-traditional meal of tilapia as the main dish, but I really wanted turkey this year, so Dad got to try his cooking skills out. Deb usually doesn't give me much latitude in the kitchen but she did not have a choice this time.
Melissa brought the side dished of sweet potato, green bean casserole and Joe, who made the cheese and broccoli soup. She seemed genuinely surprised that the turkey looked and tasted like it should and had bread stuffing for the first time. A job well done.
Our lap dog Sofie seems to REALLY like turkey so she has been enjoying the holiday as well as the other dogs who had their evening meal soaked in turkey juice. PITA even vacuumed the leftover cranberry sauce without a blink of her eye. I am not sure she even tastes her food after the first gulp.
The rest of the daylight hours were spent in cleaning gutters (for the second time this fall), chopping wood and bringing in all that I could in preparation for the little cold snap we have coming, although I am not sure I will even light the fire. Just a security blanket, I guess.
I have been watching football games while listing some things on eBay, then watched Taylor Swift special and started to go back to football when I heard some strange sounds overt the blare of the TV. It was rain on the air vents above the stove and I decided I like that sound better than the TV. The refrigerator came on and I actually found it to be intrusive. I can't wait for it to shut off.
Earlier today I heard an annoying car ad come on that has been bothering me for weeks. The brand does not really matter, but what irks me about it is this kid comparing his parents to those who got a new XXXX and saying "just because you're parents doesn't mean you have to be lame".
I think of all the parents out there who are struggling to keep their family fed, probably sacrificing every day (not getting the car they really want) to buy the coolest Christmas gifts they can afford for their children and this kid is encouraging the kids to judge their parents as LAME. Aarrgh.
All right, I finally got that off my chest. Where did that saying come from anyway, off my chest? Anyone know?
This year's Pinetree Seed catalog has me fired up for Spring ALREADY! Debbi better hide my credit cards. BUT, I am thinking about going a little different direction than most years.
We constantly go from glut to famine with the veggies and much of it is given away or wasted. We are not canners nor do we do much freezing so if it all comes in at one time, we eat it until we get tired of it and then....
