Garden club meeting coming up this Friday, February 18thPosted Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at 2:15 PM
Weed'em & Reap is here again. Friday at 7:00 PM hosted by Celebration Assisted Living on Union Street in Shelbyville.
If these past and next few days don't have your gardening blood going, stop by and we will give you a check-up.
An update opn my soil blocks, the seedlings WERE doing fine until I had some soil gnats starting to show up so I sprayed a mixture of soap, and horticultural oil on the soil and lightly on the seedlings. Catastrophe! I lost 4 out of ten seedlings and a few others don't look so good.
Next time I will use fly paper to trap the little buggers and leave the spray for when they get true leaves. That mix does not hurt plants, but lesson learned. At least no gnats.
Found a perfect dispenser to apply my diatomaceous earth on our pets. A Parmesan cheese shaker. It is small enough that it does not intimidate our pets and the holes are large enough to let a feasonable amount of DE out.
One caveat (word of caution) about storage. I was doing our inside cats in the kitchen and put it down on the kitchen table. You might be ahead of me now, but I was eating spaghetti the other night and sprinkled it on my food instead of Parmesan. Duh!
My wife got a great kick out of it and since it was food grade I went ahead and ate it (with real Parmesan as well), BUT, the shaker is now OFF the table!
It is time to plant my sugar snap peas. I may have to protect them a few times but they do not do well in hot weather and our Springs usually pop quick into Summer heat so I will take the chance.
