Searching for local community gardens.Posted Friday, February 25, 2011, at 5:48 PM
I have lost track of local community gardens. If you currently participate in one or plan one this coming year, could you let us know.
A community garden could be one that is managed by a volunteer group for people who could use the fresh produce, small garden plots that are tilled and offered to folks who don't have a good growing area available to them, or different variations of the above. Steve Mills and his wife have one daughter and live on a farm outside of Bell Buckle. They previously owned two coffee/ice cream shops, currently operate an internet sales company and teach classes, but his primary job involves the paper industry worldwide. Hobbies and interests lie in gardening, photography, recorded music and of course, their pets.

I went to talk with them a few years back. They had BIG ambitions.
From past experience, I would suggest anyone starting one of these start small. There are a lot of realities that surface during the first year or two.
Jay Pope and New Harvest along with the men of the Halfway Home had begun one of these a couple years ago. I learned Friday that the church has been sold and so the future of this project is sort of pending right now.
No response is kind of what I was expecting.
Are we sure no one is planning something like this? I would bet the newspaper would like to know.
