Garden Club, Blueberries, WEEDS and probably more.Posted Sunday, July 17, 2011, at 1:25 PM
Ever notice how you can pick for half an hour without moving, then move 3 feet, look back and there are so many sitting on the limbs you have just been picking on? And they seem to ripen UNDER the leaves faster than they do on top!
Don't ge fooled by my words now, I know I missed 'em. But it happens so often, I just can't see why I don't do better.
Sadie got frightened by snakes in the bushes but Debbi gets stopped by the bugs. Not just any bugs. They're chiggers, mosquitoes and no see'ums.
Our friend has an aluminum pan in one bush to scare the birds, and the other bush has birds to chase away the humans. Well, at least startle them. They built a nest in it and occasionally come back to remind us that it is THEIR bush.
Here is a pretty good web page for identifying weeds that seem to love gardens. http://www.garden.org/weedlibrary/ All grass in the garden is Crab grass to me, since it makes me crabby, but this page gives you tips on how to get rid of different types.
I fired up the tractor and drove the back woods this morning on the back 50. I wanted to get a good idea of what had been cut off this Spring. For one thing, Mother Nature has been quick to fill the open areas with her plants.
I walk the area frequently and know that many areas did not have the plants that I see now. How did they get seeds in there in just a few months? The big trees may be gone, but unless you poison the area, nature rebounds quickly.
I suppose my wild animal population will explode for the next few years. Much more small growth for them to feed, hide in and make nests. As I slowly cut these tree tops up for firewood, I will make numerous brush piles that will nurture and protect numerous families.
Of course, that depends on me getting my chainsaw going again. I would have said blankity blank chainsaw, but it really has served me well, for the price I paid. Considering the ethanol I keep feeding it, (not intentionally) I am surprised it lasted this long.
I had not planned to right a book this morning, so I think I will stop. Hope to see you at the garden club
