The expanding donutPosted Thursday, July 28, 2011, at 6:24 AM
An expanding blue donut is my best description of a weather pattern I saw on the local radar map this morning and I am curious if any of you weather folks could tell me what was happening.
Halfway between Florence, AL and Huntsville a blue circle with a hole in it started out about lifesaver size and expanded symmetrically out as the time lapse progressed. It did not seem to have any yellow or red in it, so I presume it was not a storm but what was it and how did it form? Any ideas? I moved around some more and found one from the Fort Smith, AR radar forming west of Hot Springs, so this must not be as rare as I thought, but still makes me wonder what and why.
I went back to look at it after I posted this and noticed that Nashville had a similar occurrence but much less defined.
I was looking at Huntsville radar, by the way, so it did not appear to be the radar sweep you might expect emanating from the radar itself.
