Weed'em & Reap Garden Club meeting this Friday

Posted Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at 7:08 AM

I know, I know, who wants to garden in this heat? Even the tomatoes are shutting down production, or are they?

Our tomatoes have plenty to ripen until this heat wave goes away,, but different varieties have different thresholds for temperature tolerance. When it is over 80 degrees all night long blossoms tend to lose their ability to be pollinated.

Thus the flower shrivels and drops off without fruit being formed. The same can happen with other plants like peppers and even squash.

Plants will also shed their flowers and fruit when heavily stressed from other factors like excessive drought or rain. But don't be too fast to pull them up. If not physically damaged, they will often rebound to produce a good late summer crop so patience grasshoppers.

The meeting starts at 7:00. The socializing and eating starts whenever you get there. New Century Chinese restaurant on Madison Street in Shelbyville in the back "party" room.

Hey, great to hear!

I may revise my book give-away in the next meeting or maybe even tomorrow. This is where I clean my shelves and have a drawing from the attendees to see who goes home with it.

The book topics are garden related, but may be about birds, butterflies, water features, organic solutions and homesteading. Just never know.
