Garden and nature ramblin'. What else on a late Fall day?Posted Friday, December 2, 2011, at 4:16 PM
The middle earth garden 'reloaded'
First, I took in the beauty of this day during lunch. While I am not a fan of Winter, it was just hard to miss that it was super outside today. Cool but clear and certainly sunny.
While standing in the midst of my wood chip garden (formerly the mid-earth garden) I was listening to the sounds and sights of what city folks would call NOTHING. But it really wasn't silent, nor was it boring as some might guess.
Birds were bouncing all over the place, some floating high up and other flittering among the bushes. A jet was making its way across the sky and I thought back to September 11th and the days following when I actually missed their presence. Squirrels were fussing at the hawk way above and the hawk was making its own song.
Then I thought of man's ability to fly and what a big advance that was so many years ago, until I noticed a little (I mean tiny) green spec floating past me on the breeze. It was a tiny green spider on its big adventure somewhere.
Early December, temps in the 40's and here comes a spider floating at least 25 yards away from the next tallest thing, so it was not still attached to something, it was flying like the "big boys" in their planes. I could see the next Walt Disney movie.
Then my eyes fell on a green patch you can see in the picture I attached. The one spot I have not spread chips and the reason is that I want to see how long the cilantro, fennel, bok choy and wildflowers are able to survive in the upcoming winter.
Yesterday morning we saw 22 degree weather and a heavy frost, yet these plants are still going strong. I even have sunflowers planted by the birds that, while a little freeze burned, are still able to grow if it stayed warm.
Spiders, cats purring by my feet, me and the jet. What a diverse group. Then it occured to me how some folks think all of this (not the jets) started from a few molecules in the mud back during prehistoric times.
They are incredulous that people of faith believe in creation and I am incredulous that they believe so many MANY wonders in this world just happened. I cannot fathom it.
