December 7, 1941Posted Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at 7:58 AM
I have to admit, the day slipped up on me. Can you imagine, (some may not have to imagine) the feelings that engulfed our nation when we received the news? It wasn't a blurb over the internet and probably most did not get it from their nightly TV broadcast, since they did not have television.
They got it from the newspaper, word of mouth or radio and I am sure it was not clear to many what was happening. Many probably did not get the news for days or even weeks afterwards.
Do you remember the confusion and fear on September 11th? We had minute to minute information overload. The people of 1941 had a daily blast of news, then word-of-mouth news that probably ran the gamut of fear and uncertainty. Maybe they had access to a radio, but many went to work not knowing anything until the end of the day, if then.
Here they were starting (back then, just starting) to think about Christmas and they hear of the death of over 2400 American military in a surprise attack by a nation many probably knew very little about. I never heard the death toll of civilians, but I am sure there were some.
This is not a time to really stir up feelings against the nation responsible but to remember the many who died and to learn from the many mistakes that were made on both sides. What is crazy is that mankind is still repeating those mistakes.
Many brave women and men are giving their lives, or living in constant threat of death while we enjoy our everyday lives. Many families have adjusted to a life on the edge, not knowing when their loved one will meet their fate, while we are living our comfortable (in comparison) life.
Just stop and think for a few moments.
