Have you checked your eBay store statistics lately?

I was getting ready for a class this week and needed to brush up on some of the research tools available to eBay sellers this weekend. In the process of doing so I ran across some interesting details on our own store.

I went to "Traffic Reports" under "Manage My Store and found out that only 47% specify English as their main language! I knew we had decent International sales (sold to the Azerbaijan Republic just this morning)but I did not realize so many were declaring a different language.

Now not all that declare Portuguese (Brazilian) are actually living in Brazil, but it may be interesting to use some of those extra spaces on the title bar to place keywords in Portuguese to see if it increases sales to that area of the world. Then try others.

Some folks still resist selling overseas and some have stopped selling because of "issues", but 40% of our business comes from some place other than the U.S. so we would be losing substantial sales but refusing to do so.

Has it all been smooth? No, we have had a few glitches, but it is not unlike some of the "shrinkage" that brick and mortar stores experience. If it is expensive, we insure it, otherwise we absorb.

Another interesting result was the search engines. No surprise that Google was dominant, but maybe I should look at finding out what Yahoo, Ask Jeeves and AOL likes to see in a listing. Could improve search results from that direction.

Ten different screen resolutions made up 70% of my browsers screen so I need to make sure I do the best I can to accommodate them with our pictures. How do I do that? Not sure, but I am going to check it out.

Probably the most interesting information was about browsers. Only 8.7% came in using Apple Macintosh operating systems but 87.7% used Safari browser to search our store. I believe Safari is an Apple product so why the difference?

I am just guessing here, but maybe they were browsing using mobile devices, specifically I-phones? If that is the case, I need to browse our listings with an I-phone to see how they show up and see if I can improve anything.

I have had requests to teach selling by using the mobile app, but stated before that it is not as user friendly as the PC. However, I need to watch that app closely and see when I can endorse it.

Other facts are available and thought provoking. 50% of our customers never return, but 50% do. How many buy the first time in or have to return? Are there ways I can improve that?

Boy, this stuff could keep me busy for some time. The results might be a better focus on our customers and their buying habits and selling is what our store is all about. Hmmm.

As far as BUYING/SAVING $ and eBay goes:

If you send the seller a question about an item, find another of their listings, and send the question from that item page, rather than from the one that you actually want. This will add a little bit of work for the seller, if they want to add the question/answer to the item description page that you are actually interested in.

If you see an item that you want listed in auction format, send the seller a message asking if they will accept $x to end the auction early and sell the item to you. May be telling them that they would not have to wait as long to get their money (they would probably know that, but it still might help). If that does not work, use a sniping service such as Bidball.com to bid for you. It'll bid in the last few seconds, helping you to save money and avoid shill bidding.

Use a site like Ebuyersedge.com to set up saved searches. You'd get an e-mail whenever a match is listed. Especially good for "Buy It Now"s priced right.

If the item that you are looking for is difficult to spell, try a misspelling search site like Typojoe.com to hopefully find some deals with items that have main keywords misspelled in the title. Other interested buyers might never see them. Then, if the item is listed an auction format, after a few days of no bids (hopefully anyway) send the seller and offer to end the auction early and sell the item to you. They may worry that no one is interested, and take whatever they can get.

I am not quite sure why you want to purposely add work to the seller, or did I misunderstand that?

Early in our eBay years we were tempted to take offers (before there was another bid on an auction) and took one, but experience now tells us that if the interest is there to make the offer, the bid could go higher, so we wait.

We have only had one item where we could have made $12 more if we had accepted the early bid. All the others went substantially above the original offer.

I have never used a sniping software but I presume there is a charge of some kind? eBay has a proxy bid system that bids for you in small increments and it is free. I have used it and saved about $21 compared to what I was will to pay.

We have also seen where the bidding will go on in cyberspace for minutes after the sale as long as the proxy bid was in before the end of the auction. I do not know if sniping software would do that.

ebuyersedge sounds interesting and your tip on misspellings has helped several times.
