Watch out for phishing e-mail looking very much like a Verizon notificationPosted Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at 10:06 AM
I just got a very formal looking notification from what appeared to be Verizon saying our bill was ready for review and payment. I am used to seeing these so I thought nothing of it until I saw the amount was 10 times our normal bill.
The temptation was to click the link to see the bill but I used the phone first to call our daughter to see if she knew of any excessive use, (she didn't) then to Verizon who said in the recording that our statement was not ready yet, so....I confirmed it was a phishing e-mail. If you want to find out if it is legit or not, if you have yahoo mail, then you can right click on the email (do not open it, just right click on the heading). Then click "View Full Header". This will tell you who sent you the email and if it was sent to multiple email addresses or not. For an example, this phishing email came from:
Received: from(account wAccountNotify at verizonwireless dot com HELO qxuhoesnbzqcnv dot pjulu dot org)
Yup, that would be a dead give-away. My spam did not catch it, yet catches ones I have already given permission.
I've gotten the same thing in a couple of my email accts, which showed up in my spam folder. I deleted it knowing that it was a phishing email because we do not have any accounts with Verizon.
I am a little concerned that the Verizon rep knew about it and Verizon had not sent out a warning e-mail themselves.
