Garden club Friday June 1st

Identification from a book. You know, with paper and ink!

Same time, same place at the New Century Restaurant on Madison Street in Shelbyville. Too bad we missed the "Fun Show" folks. We would have loved some visitors from out-of-town.

I found out that our daughter reads some of my blogs when she sent me the attached photo of a page from her wildflower book. Seems like Sandy's mystery flower is identified but we will wait for her final approval.

Planted some cactus at the garden on the square this week and watered those planted the week before. They all looked pretty good so maybe someone else is watering as well?

This hot weather looks like ti will take a break in the next few days. I am looking forward to it and the rain that will hopefully accompany it. Hot, dry weather has a way of discouraging my gardening more than anything else.

All the garlic has dried up nicely. I thought we had enough to last the year and provide our planting for next year but I am hearing plans to share our bounty so..... it may not last as long as I thought.

Our snow and sugar snap peas have just about succumbed to the heat. We might get a few more harvests, but not for much longer.

The self-sown plants are doing great in this weather. I am seriously thinking of planting seeds in early winter, like nature does. All the purposely planted veggies are requiring water, even though the wood chip mulch is retaining what I expected. Guess the roots just never developed as quickly as needed to tap the moisture.

I harvested 4 zukes in 2 days, squash are loaded, but the fruits are small and wrinkly... do I need to just wait, or is something wrong with them? Some of my smaller zukes are succomed to blossom end rot type of yuck. And my volunteer watermelons that I thought sprung up from where I tossed watermelon scraps last fall? Turns out they were acorn squash, from where I tossed out acorn squash scraps last fall, ha ha! Cukes are in full bloom, and Romas have lots of tomatoes. I'm having a great time with my weed patch this year :D

Garden on the Square has some little elves that watered last week. Can always use more.

I THOUGHT I saw elf footprints! Thanks for helping me think I was not crazy. :-)

Flowering mainly in the evening might be why Sandy does not see them much. I think she checks in early like me. :-)

craftin_mom are the zukes still tiny when they succumb? I think they and the cukes might not be getting pollinated well. I have a number of undeveloped fruit that just shrivel and die. I am just lacking the insects! A least the GOOD ones.

Yes, yes! Your very smart daughter is correct! We saw the different varities of primroses but they didn't include a picture on the "stemless" one. See everyone was on the right track.

You sound a little biased towards her Donkey Lady. Almost like a proud teacher. :-) In case I don't brag on her at the meeting, she graduated cum laude last month.

Are we going to have to worry about frost this weekend? ;>

I've missed getting out lately due to moving.

(I'm not apt to make this meeting,either.)

But,my new digs has flowers (and gardeners) everywhere.

I hope to create a good patio garden with container plants and the like.

(O.K.,found my gardening tools. Now,where are my raincoat,red hats,scissors,concrete critters, and cake pans?
