Hey, guess what is coming up this Friday, June 29th?

Posted Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at 8:18 PM

It will be happening at the New Century Restaurant on Madison Street. A bunch of friends will be getting together around 7:00 PM to chat about one of their favorite pastimes, gardening. Want to come?

Wow! What a turn-out! I stopped counting after 25. I brought vegetables to share and of course, they all disappeared.

I could not get a bead on why everyone was there. Maybe to get out of the heat. Many new faces so I thought something special going on in town, but we could not identify that either.

Most of our plants are in holding patterns with this heat and drought. I was expecting a bumper crop of figs but now will be happy to just get the plant through the summer.

I did get to dry a few figs in our new dehydrator. I never had one before and it only cost me 1.6 million I won at an industry "Casino Night". Obviously, not real money.

At any rate, the figs turned out good in my mind. A little chewy but could probably be reconstituted easily. Deb and her mother did not try them because of their "chewiness" or maybe because of the way they looked. I might try rolling them in granulated sugar next time, but they were sweet without it.

We ate our very first homegrown cantelope this week. I was almost afraid I had let it go too long, but patience paid off. It was good.

The squash bugs are really doing well this year, at least until I spray them with an oil, soap concoction I mixed up. They are still holding on since I cannot get every last one of them, but the plants are holding up so we have reach a balance of truce.

One horned tomato worm reaked havoc on a tomato plant but I have sentenced it to solitary confinement in the middle of our driveway. If it survives, it was meant to be.
