I may have opened up a can or worms.

Too pretty to be a barn cat, but....
Most of you know that over the years we have cared for a semi feral colony of cats that were dropped off near our driveway and migrated to our house. It has resulted in a large population that we are trying to get fixed and adopted, either as barn cats or pets.
With all the changes going on in our household, it has come time to take a more proactive approach and the ASPCA and other local groups cannot help, so we were referred to the government animal control. I was hesitant but made the call and now may be regretting it.
I know they have to ask but they honed in on, why have I not had them all fixed and have I kept them up to date on rabies shots. When they started talking about State law, etc. my gut started to churn. I am afraid they will look more at penalizing me for not being able to keep up with those things and less at trying to help me (and the cats) find a resolution that allows them to live out their lives.
We spend over $6,000 per year feeding them and getting medical care, so adding the cost of spaying/neutering and annual shots is cost prohibitive. I kept things going while I was employed, but circumstances have changed and that cannot keep going. Thus the request to help me find a home for them to live out the rest of their lives.
Now, I may have brought governmental red tape down on our shoulders. The saying "damned if you do and damned if you don't" comes to mind.
