I am in that "sensitive" age bracket that needs to pay extra care. Besides being over 21 I have also had 8 heart attacks and some cancer, but ya know what? It is what it is and we keep on plugging.
My main concern is the economy. I have about 100+- mouths to feed, twice a day and we cannot miss too many paychecks before tough decisions have to be made. The more the economy slows down or panics, the less I can generate income so there is MY main concern. What are yours?
Other items on my mind are moving all my plants back in before the weekend. I took them out over the past week to let them get a dose of direct sunshine and to take a bath. I had the misguided hope that night time temps might stay above 40 but it looks like the inevitable will happen this weekend.
My soil block experiment was somewhat successful. The blocks did not hold together as well as Eliot Coleman's did in his video, but in all fairness I did not have the exact ingredients and that obviously makes a difference. The success was that most seeds that germinated were able to be potted up in large cells and I did not waste a bunch of soil.
Those blocks that did not germinate a seed are thrown back into the mix and will get another chance real soon. This time with early Spring/Summer veggies and flowers that will stay in the greenhouse for 6+ weeks. They too will be potted up a week or so after germinating.
We continue to average at least two cats neutered/spayed a week but that has not stopped kitten season from happening. I picked up two newborns yesterday and put them in with another that was in a warmer, safer place than the first two. New mothers just don't get the idea of finding a safe place BEFORE THEY START GIVING BIRTH! When our dog PITA was alive, she would find them in the grass and bring them up for me to figure out who belongs to whom. I probably was not 100% at figuring but the mothers seemed to sort things out.
A note on TOILET PAPER! I deal with paper mills and they assure me that no shortage is coming from them. They are producing at 100% capacity.
With the new loosened health policies resulting from the Corona virus, I wonder if it will cut down on those annoying visits we have to make to our doctors each month, even though all they do is ask you how you are doing, document your vitals and then send you back out. Sure would be a nice side effect.
Can you imagine the fear that pandemics like this caused without all the communication venues we have now? Yes, some of those venues are probably causing more angst but in general we are able to share thoughts with friends, stay in touch and hopefully learn some valuable tips on reducing the problem. But speaking of that, what about folks who still do not have access to these venues? There are probably a good number out there who need reassurances the old fashioned way, the telephone.
