Sanity has Returned!Posted Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at 8:54 AM
This is my first year in Shelbyville/Bedford County. So I am still pretty new to the Celebration and School Closing. That was pretty rough let me tell you.
I just get in the grove of getting my kindergartener situated as to when, where and how she will go to school. That was a task in its self! So here comes the first full/regular week of school for her! Yeah she is just like her sister and 2 older brothers that have been attending school for 3 weeks already! She finally gets in the grove of waking up on time, catching the bus well over all getting ready by Wednesday! I relieved but come Friday and all next week there is no school! Wow that could not have come at a better time. Now I grew up on the west coast and once in a while I remember getting out of school for a day here or a day there for teacher in-service. But a whole week 3 weeks after school starting what are parents to do? So now today after everyone else is done Celebrating or should I say, "done with the Celebration". I am now Celebrating that my kids are back in school everything went smooth this morning and I can't wait for the first PTO/PTA meeting to start! This small town has started to grow on me but some stuff is still a bit strange, but I guess if it gives us another reason to Celebrate then bring it on! My first year living in Shelbyville and experiencing the horse show, was rather strange too. At the time, I was working for Domino's and one day while at work, I looked outside across the street, at the carwash, to see a man on his horse, underneath one of the carwash lanes. It was the strangest thing I had ever seen..even though it's a small town, it grows on you.
Glad it's over... Now, show me the money
When Al Gore announced his candidacy for president in the 2000 election, downtown Carthage was closed to vehicle traffic. Most people had to park a ways out of town and catch shuttle buses to and from the event. I covered the event, and I still remember, after it was all over, standing at the shuttle bus pickup, which was across the street from a Sonic.
Every space in the Sonic was filled -- not by cars, but by people on foot who had been waiting to catch a shuttle bus and decided to walk across the street for a burger. They were standing in front of the little menu boards waiting for their food to be delivered. It was a really funny scene -- but that was back when we were still shooting film, and I think I'd used all mine up on the announcement, so I never got a photo of it.
I believe that school should not be closed for the Celebration at all, you are right, everyone gets into the swing of things and then they are jerked right back out of the routine. I have 5 children, so it really makes it hard on me!! I can remember when my oldest daughter did not start school until after the Celebration- there's a thought!! Either wait or do not close school during the Celebration!!
I think they should wait until after Labor day to start school but they say it would have to go into the middle of June if we did that..when I was in school (which yes I know was many moons ago) we didn't start until after the horseshow and we always got out around the last of May (same as they do now)
Have they added days to the school year or something?
Going to school during the Celebration wouldn't work..too much traffic plus a lot of people in this town rent their homes out and go on vacation during this time. School clubs working the horseshow would be dawg tired because they are at the show so late then would have to go to school the next morning.
Diana, the same for me... When I was in elementary we started after Labor Day, and ended on Memorial Day...
Who's bright idea was it to change all that? And why do they start earlier and end later? It just doesn't add up!
And there is no way kids can be expected to go to school if they are also expected to raise nearly all of their funds for various clubs and organizations... for the entire year, from those two weeks of volunteering!
