Times-Gazette, how can you not love it?

Posted Monday, October 8, 2007, at 11:52 AM

First off I grew up in a big city, which I never read the paper or even thought to waste my money on supporting such negativity.

One of the first things I did when I moved to Shelbyville, TN was pick up the paper. Wow that was one of the best things I could have done. I have never seen such a wonderful newspaper, one that prints community events, pictures of kids achieving awards and just the beauty that is all around us here in Bedford County.

Your probably asking why that all of a sudden I blog about how great this little newspaper has been to my life in Shelbyville. Well the reason is because my son and his football team was posted in the Sunday paper!! He plays on a small city league and it is awesome to see that they were given a spot light in the paper.

Years ago when my first poem was published I sent out a letter to the 4 local newspapers in the city I was in about the achievement. I thought it was a great accomplishment for a 15 year old (that was years ago) to be honored at the International Society of Poetry and to be awarded for my poetry. But the only response I got back was from 1 newspaper and they were nice enough to tell me congratulations but we will not be able to acknowledge you in our paper due to the fact of space available. But they did offer for me to buy an ad space at $250 to have it posted there. Well I choose to spend my money on some new journals rather than buy an ad with that paper.

I was taught just from a few bad experiences there will be some good ones. So when I saw my sons picture in the paper I was probably the happiest person alive.

Moving to the south has been a bit of a change for me but it's the little things like this that make the people, community, county and the Times-Gazette put a smile on my face and let me know, that I have found my home.

My mother used to say "I don't know why I take this paper, there is nothing in it." She always said that after she had gotten through reading it from cover to cover, and clipping out obituaries of family and friends, and clipping out the baby pictures, and clipping out the column "In the news". Today as I am working on geneology I sure am glad there was nothing in it worth clipping out. LOL

I live in Georgia and I must tell you that I think the Shelbyville Times-Gazette is among the greatest papers in the nation. It is refreshing to see a staff with a genuine interest in the people of the community and the country at large. Bravo! Times-Gazette and your wonderful staff----keep on truckin'.

I do like the kids sports and school accomplishments in the paper. But, it does seem to always feature someone "important" in the community's kid. That ticks people off.

I didn't like that People around town column they used to do because it was never Blue Collar Bob, it was ALWAYS Need Attention Nellie.

Then, as I mentioned before, they cancelled my Who said that? column, which was very informative to me, being a SAHM.

I think what makes alot of older country people not renew it is all that horse show stuff that is NOT important to THE MAJORITY of folks. I understand the need to hype it, but it goes overboard for the uninterested.

This is just my observation from myself and several of the old people I'm around alot. I think the elderly are just thankful that they arent' in the obits. teehee

Yeah, the horse show news and advertisements for it is what turns me off of the paper during the summer but for the rest of the year the newspaper is pretty good for this size of a town.
