My biggest fear is now a reality.

Posted Monday, October 22, 2007, at 12:18 PM

From the time that I had my first child, which now has been 11 years, I worked outside of the home. At that time I also went to school as I always wanted to stay educated and make a better life for my family. At that time I was also a single mom with great help from the most wonderful person, My Dad.

Well that was years ago since then I have found the love of my life and had a few more kids, some would say a bunch! My husband gave me the opportunity to stay home with our children, which has been a wonderful blessing.

When I first got married I remained working as I never wanted to leave the work field, I had heard so many people tell me how hard it is to find a job after being “unemployed” for a lengthy amount of time.

When I was pregnant with #4 I quit working full time and have a few seasonal jobs here an there. Wow has the time past now as #4 is now in kindergarten and I am starting over once again.

I have decided to go back to work mainly because for a good 8 hours out of the day I sit and wish my kids were home. I am lonely without them but at the same time I could not home school because I believe that my children need to be around others in this world.

The choice to go back to work was an easy one. But now my fear that I had years ago about getting back in the work field is a reality. I have applied for many positions, I have a lot of different skills, eager and quick to learn procedures, and yet I have not been able to find anyone that is willing to hire me.

I am sure I’m not the only mom out there that is or has been in this position before. But now that I need to find a job for financial reasons it has been extremely discouraging and I just wonder what is there for me to do?

This is just what has been on my mind lately, I know there are much bigger issues going on in the world today but sometimes a small issue starting in your own home can turn into a huge problem if you can’t find a way to over come it.

I like to leave all my blogs on a uplifting note, as the last thing I want to do is bring any more negativity into the world. So with that said I truly hope that everyone will be able to do what they want in life and any discouragement and negativity that invades their life, that they will have the ability and strength to stop it before it destroys your spirit.

I have been in your position as far as being a single parent with only my Mom to help me. I was never fortunate enough to be able to stay at home with any of my children. That was a blessing for you and them! You will find something, it doesnâ??t sound like youâ??ve been out of the working world that long. Just give it time, the right thing will come along.

You seem comfortable with a computer. We started out eBaying to clean out our house and quickly got up to $400 -500 per month.

We are now well over that but depending on how much you need, this might be a way to still have the freedom of working from home, but also bring in some cash.

A friend of mine is in your situation. He doesn't need 12 hours shifts or 3rd shift. There aren't enough daytime jobs in Shelbyville for willing workers.

I went back and looked at your hobbies to see if you might be able to market some of your interests.

Are you at a point in your yoga, meditation and exercise that you could teach or counsel?

You could use eBay to promote your massage therapy, if you are licensed to practice on your own, or to sell your leather work.

If you are comfortable writing, you could write "how to" brochures on your areas of interest and sell them electronically on-line.

Except for the benefits of group insurance, I would not be working for anyone else. It is too confining.

My hat's off to you! I feel like I am a more well rounded person if I work. I couldn't stay home, I would go crazy, so my hat's off to you and any one else who can do it without feeling more confined than a day job.

We actually don't have to stay home all that much. We teach eBay classes, get out to yard sales and auctions and can be as flexible as we want to be. I also like being able to look out my office window and see our dogs, cats, birds, fishpond, etc.

But I understand your preference to interact with folks at work and "get out of the house". You can also walk away at night and "leave it at the office". We come home to our office, but have been able to balance things to our satisfaction.

It started out as part-time to just bring in some extra money. We enjoy it so much that is was natural to keep growing. As I mentioned though, I still work to keep the insurance going, but as you might guess there is flexibility in that job too.

Check with the Chamber of Commerce,Women's organizations, etc. for jobs, grants, mentors and venture capital.

In addition to the great ideas the others have mentioned, set aside a time and place to "work at getting work."

Resumes',research on potential employers, applications and interviews should be your 9-5 occupation until you hit paydirt.

Taking tests and refresher courses to determine and update your skills should help.

Don't underestimate the value of odd jobs and volunteer work, either.

Any use of your abilities will be more profitable than staying home feeling frustrated and obsolete.

Even if you're at the library honing your talents or assisting at your childrens' schools, you're showing that you CAN function in the outside world.

If you can do a task for a friend,a cause you support,a club, church, etc.you can apply the same gifts and enthusiasm to a job with a salary and benefits.

People will be far more impressed by the skills and work ethic they see in action than what they're told about on applications or reference letters.

Don't give up.

The people who are too foolish to see your worth are probably too dumb to stay in business anyway.

The perceptive bosses will keep you in mind for when they need more workers,an employee retires, moves, goes on leave, etc.

You could be on someone's shortlist already.
